Episode Discussion: "Man With No Name" 12.3 {October 6, 2005}

It's almost time for another episode of ER.

Things to watch for this week include:

1) According to the "next time on ER" clip for Nobody's Baby, we can expect to see Luka getting angry and taking his anger out on an assortment of inanimate Country General objects. Oooh....it's definitely going to be a Goran testosterone fest.

2) One of this season's 2 new recurring characters will make her debut in this episode. Kristen Johnston, formerly Sally Solomon on 3rd Rock from the Sun, will be making her appearance as Eve, the new Nurse Manager.

3) Danny Glover is not listed in NBC's guest star list for the show on their website, which probably means that we will not see him or the Pratt father/son story arc continued in this particular episode.

4) Finally, this is the first week that ER will go head-to-head with last year's ratings winner, Without A Trace. It should be interesting.

Here is the official description of the episode from NBC:

MAN WITH NO NAME
9:59pm 2005-10-06

THERE'S A NEW NURSE IN TOWN AND SHE MEANS BUSINESS - KRISTEN JOHNSTON ("THIRD ROCK FROM THE SUN") JOINS ER - The ER is shaken up when new nurse manager, Eve (Kristen Johnston) enforces her strict and efficient new procedures. Kovac (Goran Visnjic) and Sam (Linda Cardellini) struggle to find some civility with each while working the same shift. Abby (Maura Tierney) treats a breast cancer patient who is having a hard time coming to terms with her condition. Parminder Nagra, Mekhi Phifer, Shane West and Laura Innes also star. TV-14

Um....ER went head-to-head with Without a Trace last week. I'm not sure how the ratings went, but I have a feeling WaT won, since it was their season premiere.

Sorry about that - I thought that the WaT's premiere was on a different day last week than Thursday due to the schedule change that they made for the week ending September 25.

Anyway, yes WaT won out over ER. However, CSI and Desperate Housewives beat WaT for the week.

Hey, ER made it into the top 15...not bad considering a less-than-stellar premiere. No surprise to see CSI at the top though (not that I'm complaining - that's my second favorite show).

Yeah.

Too bad for ER though, that CBS is going on and on about how much they beat the crap out of ER on Thursday in that time slot.

Here's the clip that CBS has been sending out.

• WITHOUT A TRACE was first in households (13.8/22), viewers (20.98m), adults 25-54 (7.9/19), second in adults 18-49 (6.4/17, -0.2 behind NBC) and adults 18-34 (4.6/14). This is the largest margin of victory ever for a first run episode of WITHOUT A TRACE against a first run "ER" in viewers. In adults 25-54, this is also the largest margin of victory ever and only the second time WITHOUT A TRACE has topped "ER" in this demographic. It was also the smallest difference, -0.2, between first run episodes of WITHOUT A TRACE and "ER" in adults 18-49.

Yeah that is getting kind of annoying.

Nine and a half more hours!

Haha

For all the drama they previewed in last week's teaser, it was actually a funny episode. And, honestly, I was pleasantly surprised. We had a little bit of everyone, and it seems like ER is getting back the camraderie they've been lacking in past seasons (even if it happened when everyone ganged up against Eve).

Highlights:
- Everyone working together against Eve. Nice to see friendship and little fighting.
- Weaver. I'll admit it, I missed her.
- Luka and Abby's "conversation" at the end.
- Neela's box to Gallant. The whole thing, from the pictures to the pizza to Frank's porn tape.
- Morris's antics on the wheelchair trying to see Neela's pictures.

Lowlights:
- As much as I liked the storyline with the rollerblader girl, I guess I just wasn't drawn into the story as much as I was expecting to.

Looks like another good one next week!

Honestly? I cannot help but think an alien has landed in the ER.

I really liked this episode, but I don't like Eve at all! She's even meaner than Weaver can be. Should be interesting to see how she continues to shake things up? Am I the only one that thinks ER is trying to work Abby and Luka back together? Full recap and review on my review site if anyone's interested!

I think that it was an okay episode.

Yes, it tried to be funny, but I couldn't help feeling like it was a bit like bathroom humor from the 9th grade. There were like 2 jokes about genitalia, 1 joke about soft porn, 1 scene with porn noises, and discussion about porn videos.

One of these things would have been funny, but all of them in the same episode just made it seem like one or more of the writers need to get laid before they start thinking about future ER episodes.

I have always been mixed about Kristen Johnston's appeal and acting ability, but last night I thought that she was terrific.

Yes, Abby and Luka part 2 seems to be on the horizon. Will it be a different result? That's the only thing that we haven't had any hints about so far?

Overall, I was happy that I taped this episode so that I didn't have to blow off The Day After Tomorrow and The Edge in order to see it.

Not completely awful...but not that great.

One last thing:

Sherry got a partial exit line yesterday.

If you keep up with the spoilers, then you know that Susan had appeared in the original script for last night's episode. It was supposed to have been Susan who was walking with the grant officers. Those scenes were altered so that Weaver played the part.

During that altered scene, someone (I think either Abby or Morris) asks Weaver, if it's true that Susan got a "tenured position at another hospital"? Weaver responds that Susan is just "interviewing", so nothing is definite.

It's nice to see them mention Susan's name, but unless they plan on stating that Susan actually got the position in a latter episode, it's a bit confusing because it sounds like Sherry Stringfield isn't planning on coming back so why not say that she 'got' the position.

I think they pretty much made it clear that she wouldn't be back towards the end when Kerry was stitching up Luka's face and told him that until they hire more faculty, except for the moonlighters, they (Luka and Kerry) were the only attendings.

I also liked Kerry's line about the moonlighters because that's how Luka came to be at the hospital in the first place. I think the last time they really mentioned a moonlighting doc was when he was hired, so it's almost a case of things coming full-circle for him.

Yes, but that easily could have been interpreted as an initial reference to the arrival of John Leguizamo's character - an arrival that NBC has been promoting for the last few weeks.

I would have considered the issue to be closed, if the writers had referred to Susan by name in that comment (and if she had accepted the position), just as they referred to her by name when they mentioned that she was interviewing elsewhere.

But, oh well...we got what we got.
