Exactly, all of this. And it's not that I don't want couples to happen, no, I just wanna know that both characters can exist without each other and still be just as interesting. I want romantic relationships to be ONE of the many aspects of a character/show, not ALL of it.

And ER would do a good job of that when it came to Carol, but inevitably when they needed to create some conflict in her life they would have something happen with or about Doug.

I agree. Once you watch a show only for a ship, then chances are greater you'll be disappointed.

There' also her failed suicide attempt and her getting past it and being in control of her life like she said in season 3. Carol's relationship's weren't the only aspect to her character.

I love that Golden Globes animation I remember i watched those awards live and when she went over to George i couldn't stop smiling. It was one of the highlights of those awards for me.

This happened to Nav and ET, one of my favorite couples. Nav was pretty cool. She was promoted lieutenant very young and was actually the superior of her love interest. She was funny, strong, caring, kick-butt, ultra smart, but for some reason, most of her stories tended to revolve around ET. When she got angry, it was about or at him. When she cried, it was about him. When she was happy, it was against mostly about him. Even after he died, her big story was about his murder, her grief and catching his killers. The few episodes that season that weren't about his death, she didn't have that much to do. She did have one episode where she was shown outside of grief mode but then she seemed to almost not be shown the others. It wasn't surprising that the actress chose to quit at the end of the season because the writers really didn't seem to know what to write for her without him, which is a shame because even though I adored the couple, she was a very interesting character on her own right.

I see this the same way with Carol. I adored Doug and Carol too, and thought Carol was great but all her big stories seemed to revolve around Doug and when he left, she seemed lost. She still had some scenes but it wasn't the same.

I specifically use those two examples because they are two couples I loved, but I find it a shame that when a couple gets very popular, and one of the half leaves, the writers so often don't know how to write for the remaining half.

Among the ER women, I think Elizabeth is the most extreme example among all of them. When she started, she was tied up to a man (Peter), then when they broke up, she becomes coupled up with another (Mark). Okay, she had her own moments to shine, but most of her storylines revolve around romance, more so than Carol did. When Mark died, apart from the Paul Nathan arc, what else?

At least with Doug and Carol, both had big storylines of their own during their relationship. It could have been worse.

With both Carol and Elizabeth, towards the end of their runs it felt like the writers were really scratching their heads to come up with new stories for them. With Carol specifically, it felt like "Okay she'll deal with this patient for the whole episode to get us through this week" and the writers kind of scraped along with her. And I think a lot of that had to do with the character running her course, which Julianna herself admitted was one of the reasons she left. Characters aren't meant to have eternal life-spans, and I think it's just unfortunate that Julianna had to be on the show (by contract) for just a tiny bit longer than Carol needed to be.

That's why I love "Such Sweet Sorrow" so much as an exit episode for Carol. You really see her realise, "Just what the hell am I still doing here, drifting through each day, when there's a whole life waiting for me somewhere else?".

and she is my favorite ER character. They had so much potential there. And I still think they would have done a much better job if Elizabeth and Peter had remained friends. But it seems impossible to have a male/female relationship that doesn't involve romance (Mark/Susan anyone?)

I agree, there would've been a lot of things they could've shown in Carol's storyline but I also know that there have been a lot of characters and a lot of storylines they needed to show...

Yeah. In my opinion, the biggest mis-step the writers took with Carol was by saddling her with Shep for an entire year right after she broke up with Tag. Now, this has nothing to do with my feelings about Shep as a character. Carol could have been with anyone at that point and I still wouldn't have liked it, because it made Carol seem quite flaky. Like, she had been head over heels in love with Doug, then stuck in a relationship with Tag, and then as soon as she had made her peace with both, she was in love with ANOTHER guy. So I think Season 2 would have been a nice opportunity for the writers to explore Carol on her own (as they did in Season 3) instead of partnering her up again.
