The Good Wife in one of today's NY Papers. Show is getting such great buzz, I really hope lots of people watch!!

FALL SERIES THEY'RE CALLING CAN'T-MISS

THE fall shows aren't even out of the starting gate and the usual suspects are chomping at the bit.
There are large-cast medical dramas ("Mercy," "Trauma," "Three Rivers"), remakes ("Eastwick"; "Melrose Place"), quirky comedies ("Community"; "Modern Family") and spinoffs ("NCIS: Los Angeles"; "The Cleveland Show").
But one show has the surefire elements of a breakout hit: CBS' "The Good Wife," which premieres Sept. 22, seems to be the fall's only good, old-fashioned adult drama -- with an unexpected, topical twist.
The series, created by the married production team Robert and Michelle King, stars Julianna Margulies as the wife of a disgraced Chicago politician who must go back to work as a lawyer to support the family while her husband serves time in jail.
Margulies' character, Alicia Florrick, is a direct descendant of Silda Spitzer and Elizabeth Edwards -- the stalwart wives of former Gov. Eliot Spitzer and presidential hopeful John Edwards.
"We started writing 'The Good Wife' a year ago, when you could still hike the Appalachian Trail and not snicker," Robert King told reporters earlier this month -- referring to South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford's lame excuse for his absence from the state, before admitting that he'd been in South America with his mistress.
"After a series of scandals, the politician's trajectory seemed predictable. What interested us more was the politician's wife's trajectory, because it seemed much less certain.
"How do you remake your life when everyone seems to have an opinion of how you remake your life?" he said.
"The show works on several fronts," says Brad Adgate, senior vice president and corporate research director at Horizon Media, which buys time for TV advertisers. "It has an identity with women. The character opted out to raise the family now she's back in the work force and has to start all over again."
"Corrupt politicians in Illinois is not too far-fetched a plot," he adds.
Tvsquad.com, the respected online news site, also cites the show's "superb cast" -- which includes Christine Baranski, Josh Charles and Chris Noth from "Sex & the City" -- as its chief draw.
"There's a lot to like in 'The Good Wife,' " says TVsquad blogger Allison Waldman, "including the Aaron Sorkin-style walk-and-talk dialogue, and I suspect that audiences will tune in for the premiere and keep coming back for more."
"The pilot had me from the beginning when we see her standing there," says Margulies, who won an Emmy in her first season on "ER," "I was so taken by that scene. I feel like these women really don't get their due.
"Look at Hillary Clinton! It's not like these are silly little wallflowers waiting for their husbands to come home."
The Kings have had only spotty success as producers in the past -- which makes the story behind the show even more Hollywood.
In 2006, they created a show called "In Justice" -- about a team of lawyers who specialize in getting wrongly convicted criminals freed. It featured Kyle MacLachlan, pre-"Desperate Housewives," and lasted just 13 weeks on ABC.
A year later, their second series, called "Judy's Got a Gun," about a single-mom cop coming back to the force five years after quitting to have a baby, never got past a one-off pilot.

The compassionate and passionate Carol was supposed to die in the original pilot, but we're glad she lived since watching her struggles was as intriguing as watching her romance with Dr. Ross. Though, we did question her judgment at first when she didn't immediately follow George Clooney to Seattle.
