Batwoman: Season 1, Episode 7 - "Tell Me the Truth" Review

I agree with what IGN said about Sophie.

For Felicity she was changed because of the fans, not necessarily as a plan from the start. I'd say Laurel Lance is a better example - & she was quite obviously pushed out of her comic role completely due to the fans reaction to Felicity, but it seemed from the start they didn't want her to fulfill the GA/BC relationship to me or weren't sure if they wanted to or not then Felicity sold them on moving on from it. That's different to changing a character from the start.

From what I've seen Iris was adopted in the comics & also sent as a baby to the past by her birth parents? Not sure that the show does that with her character? I could be looking up a different character & be wrong though...

So do I. That part of the episode & her character is lacking. I don't get her purpose. While I'd rather not have a love triangle, I'd like her to have a better role than what she's got. What she has is weird & as it said - they're setting her up for audiences to hate her

I was just referring to ethnicity and changing it in casting for roles. Iris isn't black in the comics. Jimmy is another example, where Supergirl casted a black male.

I totally agree regarding Sophie. That was weird and awkward to watch.

I wish I understood what they were doing with Sophie, it may make it easier to watch but still not sure

I’m less interested in Sophie and more interested in the Kane-Hamilton sisters.

It's funny that Laurel got brought up because she's a direct analogue to Sophie and the role that she (Sophie) fills.

Well, oddly enough in the comics Kate ended up on her own island for a while. Wasn’t as bad as Oliver’s time. But she did meet the Safiyah character, whose name was dropped in the most recent episode.

If they ever did that backstory on the show some might just accuse them of copying Arrow.

Oh, I'm not sure what other changes there are. I'm sure there is more. I just don't know the comics well enough to speak about it in depth.

The Earth-1 Laurel was the "expected love interest" who ultimately existed simply as a thematic foil to Oliver and whose journey took her on a different path.

Sophie, thus far, has been presented in a similar light, being that she's not even open about her own sexuality with either herself or others and is currently on a path that doesn't center on becoming Kate's love interest.

There are 1-to-1 comparisons to be made between the character archetypes that Arrow Season 1 introduced and the character archetypes that Batwoman has thus far utilized that are far more blatant than for other series in the Arrowverse, although all of the Arrowverse series follow a similar archetypal pattern and formula.

BTW, here's how Arrow and Batwoman's characters line up in terms of archetype:
Oliver/Kate - Brooding hero
Quentin/Jacob - Father-figure ally
Laurel/Sophie - "Expected love interest"/platonic ally
Moira/Catherine - Mother-figure antagonist
Felicity/Luke - Tech assistant
Thea/Mary - Sibling/ sidekick
Malcolm/Alice - Quasi-familial enemy

Tommy Merlyn and Diggle don't have archetype counterparts on Batwoman, but that is only because Batwoman has fewer main characters.

Yeah, I just enjoy the show for what it is. And don't try to compare or find similarities between other characters from other shows.

I’m fine with things as they are right now.

Kinda hope the crows don’t last. They seem shady.
