I can imagine, it seems a lot of actors playing abusive characters struggle with this stuff.

It's so weird, but for someone who watches a lot of horror without batting an eye, that scene where Joe hallucinates Beck taking off her scarf and making him look at her neck bruises made me really uncomfortable. I think it's that contrast of him acting so in love with her, then snapping and turning to such brutality towards her, we didn't see her death onscreen so this was the first explicit glimpse at what he'd done. So I guess Penn did a good job!

I was almost happy they showed that than her actual death scene because I think that would of been too much for me to handle
