Did NFL lean on ABC to scrub football soap?

That's the assertion working its way around the blogosphere periphery this morning. We spotted it at AOL FanHouse, which found it at Cyber Hermit. There's another report at Digital Spy.

Here it is in British media-ese from Digital Spy: "It is understood that Disney and the NFL raised concerns that Football Wives, as the US version would have been called, would not sit well with NFL coverage on ABC." Understand?

We know that ABC is indeed passing on the show, at least for now. We know that the cast included Ving Rhames, Lucy Lawless, James Van Der Beek and a real football wife, Holly Robinson Peete.

And we know that the show was derived from the British Footballers' Wives ("footballers" meaning "soccer players," of course), which was your classic tale of murder, illicit affairs, kidnapping, poisoned cocaine and so forth among a bunch of people apparently married to soccer players. That show was on ITV overseas but picked up in the USA on BBC America.

All of which makes Playmakers, the short-lived ESPN show that didn't exactly please the NFL front office, look tame by comparison. (Though perhaps Football Wives would skip the portrayal of female journalists that real-life female journalists did not appreciate.)

If we get any confirmation or denial, we'll pass it along.

The reason why it's so dissapointing is because we honestly thought that this show would be picked up. The BBC version was a huge hit, and it seemed like it would be a huge hit here. I don't know why the NFL would be so concered about this show, we all already know that football players do what they do so it's not the hugest surprise.

Good idea Brit, Maybe searching Jordin american's idol and the date sth will show up. I won't hav internet at hme until the weekend (luckily) so I can't search though
