One thing continuously bothers me every time I hear it. I'm not sure if the Spanish speakers playing prominent characters on the show are legitimately fluent or not, but why has not a single one of them told everyone that Ortecho is being pronounced wrong every single time it has been said?
The letter Ch in Spanish is pronounced as a "tch" (tʃ) sound, not as a hard K! It's or-TETCH-oh (ends up sounding more like or-TEYCH-oh), not or-TEK-oh. Granted, I also heard Nathan in an earlier episode mispronounce a Hispanic character's name (Gerardo) as djeh-RAR-doh, instead of heh-RAR-doh. "Ge-" is pronounced as "heh", not with a soft G (dʒ). Think Geraldo Rivera. At least Nathan has an excuse of not being a Spanish speaker. I can't believe no Spanish speaker corrected these while making the show. Pretty embarrassing to make a big deal about your lead female being a Latina, only to have all the characters not be able to say the last name. Probably was a good idea to change the name for the prior show (they were actually not intending to whitewash!--they only changed the character because they found Shiri, who is actually half-Moroccan-Israeli and not actually white, and wanted her badly enough to switch it--few realize that Spanish-as-her-first-language Majandra Delfino was actually born in Venezuela and Jason Behr is part-Ojibwe, as well), given nobody can pronounce it in this one. There was a guy on Twitter whose last name is Ortecho who tweeted Melinda Metz about the fact that it was uncommon to see his last name used in popular media, but even commented on the fact that people mispronounce it all the time as "Orteko". |
There's really no real main character that is Latino outside of Jeanine unless her herself is saying it wrong  assuming she's Spanish considering the fact that Liz goes all Latino at times
I know that Trevino is full blown Mexican but also came across something that he lost his bilingual as a kid from having a white babysitter  Only real Latino would be Sheriff Valenti and well Daddy!Ortecho |
I have no clue about anything about this. So I can't really say anything.

Yep, Jeanine is guilty of saying it wrong. Ditto the actors playing Arturo and Rosa.
The only way they can save this blunder is to use the excuse that Americans were all saying it wrong, so the family changed their pronunciation. NOBODY has said it correctly on the show yet. I'm not even Latina, but between living in San Diego and taking a few years of Spanish classes in school, it's insane that "ch" is tripping them all up. Even gringos who grew up anywhere in the Southwest shouldn't be messing this up. Don't believe me? Plug it into the Google Translate text-to-voice and listen (and yes, it's said correctly there). Think of the "ch" in "nachos", "churro", "leche" and "muchacho". It NEVER changes. I believe you, but to me it isn't a big deal tbh.

I honestly don't see it being addressed :look: unless Latino community make a big fuse over it :look:
Don't get me wrong, I respect the aspect that it is wrong but I highly don't see it being addressed :look: |
