I think what Michael and Maria have is potential.
They've known each other for a long time. They've built up a rapport with each other, they can tease and flirt and trade witty banter with each other. Maria has probably seen Michael at his worst, when he's drunk and angry and lashing out. He's apparently very bad at paying his debts, and yet she has never banned him from the bar. They've talked about it in a joking manner, but clearly neither of them took it seriously because Michael keeps coming back and she doesn't try to stop him. Could you image Racist Hank reaching over Maria Deluca's bar for help himself to a drink and not immediately losing that hand? It would never happen. When Michael did it, she made a comment about it and then served him anyway. They act like they don't like each other, but deep down they care about each other. When Maria was breaking down after putting her mother in a home, Michael comforted her and Maria let him. She was able to let her guard down around him in a way she didn't with Liz and Alex. When she was upset at the bar in Texas, Michael urged Liz to go after her because he felt she needed somebody. When Michael was talking to Arizona about his hand, Maria was so supportive and concerned for him. They are attracted to each other. Maria admitted he was hot and Michael has admired her a few times, and honestly they're both very good looking people, why wouldn't they be attracted to each other? They have good chemistry with each other. Their relationship is organic and it's theirs. It's entirely independent of anybody else's. They didn't become friends because they had mutual friends, or were forced to interact. Their relationship came about because their life decisions brought them into contact. They both have a deep connection to Alex, but he has nothing to do with how their relationship formed. If Michael's ex and Maria's best friend were two entirely different people, they'd still be at the exact same place with each other. (Which is why although I think it was wrong of Michael to sleep with Maria knowing she is Alex's best friend, I also they they had every right to sleep with each other because their relationship is independent of Alex; to them Maria is Michael's friend, not Alex's best friend and Michael is Maria's friend, not her best friend's ex. If that makes sense.) So, all the ingredients are there. I think their relationship is like a little sapling. It has put down good roots, and with time and space and breathing room, it has the potential to really grow into something incredible. (Un)Fortunately, it's living in the shadow of a much larger tree and that tree absorbs most of the light and the water, even though maybe it doesn't have the same kind of secure roots as the sapling does, its sheer size and density makes it impossible for the sapling to grow. If that tree was gone, the sapling would thrive. __________________

I agree that its got potential
which is why my notorious shipper side has always right from their first scene loved them I just hope they move it towards friendship cause I agree with all you said but its hard to want to romantically ship them even if I do all the same  __________________
