The Vikings travelled all over the place, but they never really stayed in one place long. The ones who stayed in those areas eventually blended in with the local cultures, while the rest of the Vikings returned to Scandinavia. They never had a central seat of power like Rome did, so they really didn't successfully expand their empire.
