Well, it wasn't exactly a duel. Indy was using his whip to keep the swordsman at bay, and he was supposed to end up using the whip to knock the sword out of the guy's hand. Basically what happened in Temple of Doom when Indy ended up doing the fight scene that they were going to do in Raiders.
