It wasn't necessary to make the story go there. It was a distinct choice that revealed something abut Lucas.

Well, his buddy Francis Ford Coppola did a gangster movie, and those guys were ruthless. So did Martin Scorsese.

And if you ever read some of the science fiction from the Heavy Metal magazine, you'd know that Lucas showed incredible restraint.
