It's a trademark? Doesn't it refer to tight-fighting brief-style bathing togs for men? Because over here that used to be the normal sort of bathing togs for men, since long before the '80s. I got hold of the boxer shorts type of bathing togs as quick as I could and stuck with them. The other type made me feel naked.

I think it's a trademark in a way that hoover is a vacuum cleaner. It now refers to a wider range of bathwear like we say hoovering when we're cleaning.

Speedos are the swimming trunks that Olympic swimmers normally wear, because they're slim and tight they reduce drag and allow a swimmer to swim faster than with standard swim trunks. I'm guessing that's why they were called "speedos," but I'm not sure.
