I am still giving Grace the benefit of a doubt that she will eventually come around, and be less narcissistic. I think she is so depressed right now, and has been since Cal got sick, and she just wants things back to “normal”. Eventually she has to accept that it is not just Ben but also Cal who is having Callings so her life will never be normal again.

I just do not understand why she does not want to know where her son was for 5 1/2 years that he did not age. The pat explanation that she was just looking for an excuse to get rid of Ben does not explain that one.

I find it hard to give her the benefit of the doubt when she's the way she is.

Maybe she just doesn't care? She won't like the explanation so she's not even looking for one.

Maybe it’s because I know the living nightmare of having your child terminally ill. And my husband often blamed me in anger for even wanting another child when the stress got too much. So I can see why she acts that way.

I also feel like Grace never moved on or properly mourned because she was stuck in the anger cycle of grief. And until she gets out of that she is not going listen to Ben. And now she is also in denial that something is going on with Cal. She wants a normal life. I actually am going to write a meta about her because it is a fascinating character study.

She frustrates me to no end. Mainly because she still has Danny hanging around when the best thing for her kids is to cut ties with him. Despite how Olive might feel right now, she will get over it and can bond with her father, brother and aunt instead. And Cal certainly does not need a new, strange man around.

But I don’t hate her and can actually feel for her. I can probably even understand why she won’t completely let go of Danny and the “normal” he represents.

No kidding. Jeff describes the drawing Cal made of his family in episode 2 as including a “sinister figure”. If that was Danny, then he is going to be bad news for Cal. But even if he is just an innocent victim of circumstance, his presence will be bad for Cal’s adjustment. And he is not prepared for Cal’s unique circumstances. Even without the callings, the boy did not age for 5 1/2 years. That would freak most prospective step fathers out.
