Yeah, that’s what I’m saying. Actor availablilty at the beginning of a series shouldn’t be a problem. I think they wanted to focus on other stories faster but it seems odd that he’s not around. They could have just dropped a quick “I had lunch with dad today “ to show he’s around without actually showing him

He had Cal up at the cabin in the mountains for a couple of days in 4. But that does not explain the other 7 or 8 before we see him again.
