The visit was fine

One little issue; grandma asked son to move off her chair. He said no. Then she proceeded by trying to pull him off. He laughed. So she gave up and got another chair for herself.
I then stepped in and took son away. But he was really upset that she didn't respect his "no". And I kinda agreed with him, if you can't accept the answer to be no, then don't ask the question

I don't know the context that this happened, but I that's a bit tricky, because old people already have their routine, so I understand her asking him to move to another chair... also she is older, so out of respect he should've moved

He should move, it's her chair
But I would've preferred if she had said that: "I want to sit in that chair, move over please." Instead of what she did: "Can I sit there?"
I get that she asked it because she didn't want to order him around, but if you want something to happen, you shouldn't ask, but demand. < And demanding can perfectly well be in a nice way

I think she probably just wanted to be polite since you guys were visitors. I get what you mean though , but maybe it's a cultural thing, here in Brazil demanding something like that is considered rude, so the polite question works a sort of hint for the other person and be polite at the same time.

Ah yeah, I do get it.
We visit them like twice a week though, so it's not a formal thing. It's just that she wanted to be nice. I think you can still be nice whilst being clear in your expectations.

(I'm sorry, I just thought of this now; did I say oldest son probably has some sort of autism? His mind doesn't understand the polite question as being disguised )
