It's quite hard to explain.. It's a setting most DSLR cameras have, it's practically the digital equivalent of a negative, it's what the image is before the camera processes it to JPG (because when a camera converts it to JPG, it already adjusts it a lot) but except of doing that, shooting in RAW allows you to do it manually, so once you load it onto the computer you still have to change various settings like exposure, colour balance, etc.

When a camera has a RAW setting it is always highly encouraged to use it - but I'm not sure how it fits with this challenge.

Maybe this makes more sense: Tutorials - The RAW File Format

Val: I read through the link you gave, and I am kinda on the fence. Your not extactly using PS, but your using PS options (such as Color saturation). Hopefully Jule will reply soon.

Doing challenges down the track where you can photoshop text etc onto pics, isn't that pretty much a fanart competition?

Photography rocks.
I agree with this.

I think what Tina and Jule mean is that in this challenge it's just not fair to use Photoshop to brighten things up and stuff when it's all about showing contrast. You could just take any picture and then work on the contrast in Photoshop (that is, if you don't do something like old-new contrast).
As for the other challenges, I think the main point is that there won't be challenges about photography with text but that people do like to put their name on the photograph for credit purposes. I don't think Tina and Jule plan on making a challenge about adding stuff to a photograph with Photoshop.
And if Photoshopping is allowed without any restrictions, then who can truly say if someone did more than just brightening stuff? It's about making art with a camera and not improving a picture so it will be art.
Besides, it's not like you won't be able to use Photoshop in future challenges. It's just for this specific challenge that you're not allowed.

Yeah I got that

About the whole RAW thing - let's just for the sake of making things less complicated agree not to use it for this challenge. I was probably the only one who would shoot in RAW anyway so for this challenge I'll just stick to JPG then

No problem

Now I just somehow need to find a way to get inspired before Friday

ETA: I have another annoying question are we allowed to crop the photo, if we don't change anything else?

Val: Nope... You have to rely on light sources (outside: sun, inside pic: lamps) to lighten up your picture. To crop, I would try to focus in on the picture.. try to look around in your view finder before you snap -- that way there aren't any objects sneaking in the corner of the pictures that you dont want to be there. Try different angles of the picture to get a good crop. Don't just take one picture, take multiple picture of the same thing in order to achieve what we want.

I hope I answered your question.

I'm not Jessie, Isa. I'm Tina. Thanks for your input, I surely agree with you!

I'll have to think of something different, then. I took a picture this afternoon that would've been perfect, but it was more of a chance shot so there's a lot of negative space in the shot that really ruins it, a quick crop would've fixed that. But I'll take some more pictures, then

Since Jule or I didn't recieve any entries, we are thinking about a new topic.

Which one do you guys find more appealing?

Theme: Freedom
Take a picture of whatever you think defines freedom.

Theme: Your Personal Paradise
A picture of YOUR personal paradise. It doesn't matter what is on the pic as long as it is special to you.

Vote!
