MarieSD: They are quite expensive. I am not sure of any free ones that have animation programs, sorry. Perhaps someone else will know.

Before using Photoshop I used to use Photoscape. Photoscapes can do animations but you need to be able to extract the frames to do it. I use KMPlayer to get the frames and then open photoscape and make the animations from there.

I'm confused. I don't think I've asked the right question for what I'd like to do. I want to take a Glee episode and chop part of it out. What program(s) should I use?

All good tips. There are lots of animation programs which allow you to edit the clips, save the frames which you can then import to make your gifs. So it depends. I suggest giving one a go and see what works for you.

I'm not sure. Is there some kind of place where it says converter, or save to web?

I've just started learning how to make gifs, through my usual trial and error experimenting, so I thought I'd post these on this thread too. I used Photoshop Elements 9 and I must point out that the quality of the films are not great on DVD through my computer as per usual, especially with old films. I altered the brightness and contrast of the images, and there was only one speed I could use which seemed suitable in the options. Here are the first four I tried.
The Shout John's character Anthony falling down the sand dunes after hearing the deadly Shout (with cotton wool in his ears) Anthony hears Crossley (the owner of The Shout) moving about in the night Manhunter __________________
