Law of Surprise - when someone saves you from "certain death" they can claim the law of surprise as gratitude. It means that when you return home whatever thing you find there that you didn't know you were going to find there, belongs to the person who saved your life. They don't. Pavetta's MOTHER had "elder blood" - which I think is actually elvish, that allowed her to have magical abilities. Pavetta also has the same blood, but the gift skipped her generation (like how some genes might skip a generation and show up in the next one) but her daughter, and her granddaughter both have magical abilities because of the elder blood.

Doesn't have anything to do with being a child surprise.

Calanthe is the queen and grandmother to Ciri. Pavetta is Ciri's mother.
