I don't think they were that bad, but I'll need to re-read them. I think a lot of people liked the comics based on reviews I've read & of course plenty did not. Usually though I'd recommend not making a T.V. show based on a comic book or character that most are not interested in or just don't enjoy reading about. It certainly is not a cheery story.
Anyway, onto this show. I saw the Pilot last night & it was solid. So in the opening 5 minutes of ''The Umbrella Academy'' it was pointed out they were in 1989 Russia, which was of course the Soviet Union back then & they showed a picture of Lenin on a wall in a room with a pool. Of course that would happen in Russia in the late 80's, but nowadays it seems inappropriate & I'd not swim with a pic of that guy right above me. So that was disappointing & then to my surprise a woman gives birth in a pool. Yikes. That is something that I don't remember seeing before happen to a woman & never want to see again. Jesus. I don't think they showed all of the children's births thankfully. I guess there are worse places for women to give birth, like a park or restaurant, but I'm not a woman & they can decided for themselves on their preferences. Finally, Diego apparently has a temper & he's annoying. I don't know at this time why his siblings would want to be around him. It's also odd that only of them from watching just the first episode is interested in finding out more about their dad's death. __________________

Yeah. It read on the screen ''1989 Russia'' I think, but of course that was before the Soviet Union collapsed.

No. I was disappointed the first scene of the show had people in a pool with a picture of Lenin on a wall there. I know he had or perhaps still does have a cult of personality there, but that's just odd nowadays if people are familiar with that country's history.

The symbols were pretty over the top, I think they wanted to make sure viewers knew where it was set.
Are we also supposed to assume that Vanya was born there? Her name is Russian after all. __________________

I think so. And with her importance to the story it makes sense that her birth was the only one shown.
