That's better than not watching them at all.

A lot of people go into it with bias because of the bad reviews

I've learned not to always trust critic reviews. Their thoughts usually differ from the fans.

I've largely stayed away from the Marvel Netflix stuff - although I did watch the first 7 episodes of Daredevil Season 1 once upon a time - but need something new to watch and have decided to give the franchise a second try, and am willing to post reviews here if anybody is interested in hearing my thoughts.

^ Okay.

Here's my "bullet-point" reviews for "Into the Ring", "Cut Man", and "Rabbit in a Snowstorm".

Into the Ring
* I really like the Teaser for this episode; starting with the "origin scene" of Matt losing his eyesight and then going straight to him in a Catholic Church confessional immediately tells rhe audience everyrhing they need to know about the character and who he is.

* I wasn't familiar with the character of Karen Page before I watched the series for the first time, but she quickly became one of my favorite characters, and that hasn't changed. Deborah Ann Woll has immediate chemistry with both Charlie Cox and Eldon Henson, and the scene where she lies to Matt about having saved a copy of the illicit information that got her into the predicament she's in in the first place is really well-acted

* I love the way the series uses its flashbacks as a narrative device, especially in the aftermath of Matt saving Karen and falling out of her apartment window

* Keeping Vincent D'Onofrio - who was a major "get" for the series - offscreen save for a credited "vocal cameo" was a really effective way to intro/tease the Kingpin because it creates this aura of mystique about him and helps make the moment he does end up showing up on screen more impactful even though said debut is so innocuous

* Even though the series is part of the MCU, I appreciate the fact that it doesn't blast that fact in the audience's face, especially now that I've been personally burned out by the MCU's filmic output

Cut Man
* As with the Pilot, this episode has a really great Teaser, and the fact that it opens "in media res" with Matt having been beaten up and stabbed after responding to the cry for help he heard as the Pilot came to and end is a nice subversion of expectations

* Rosario Dawson, like Vincent D'Onofrio, is a major "get" for the show, and the way she's introduced is great, as are her interactions with Matt throughout the episode; making her essentially his "Alfred" and "Leslie Thompkins" rolled into one character adds a new layer to his vigilantism and helps enrich the world in which the series takes place

* Foggy and Karen's drunk bonding was one of my favorite parts of this episode when I first watched it, and nothing changed this time around, although I did get a bigger kick out of their "We drank the eel" ramblings this time around

* I understand the mythological significance of telling Jack Murdoch's story, but do wish that the writer and director had found a more organic way to integrate those sequences into the present-day story with Matt, Claire, and his mission to rescue the little boy who was snatched by the Russians

Rabbit in a Snowstorm
* I don't quite understand why the episode opens the way that it does, especially with the "36 hours earlier" tag that flashes on the screen, which is a bit of a letdown necause of how strong the Teasers for Episodes 1 and 2 were

* I loved the "courtroom drama" elements of this episode, particularly Matt's "closing argument" speech, although I wish there'd been a stronger sense of how and why the jury couldn't come to a decision on Healy's guilt or innocence

* Ben Urich's introduction in this episode holds even more emotional weight if you're aware - like I am - of how his story ends up before the end of the season, as does Karen coming to see him at the end of the episode

* I mentioned this earlier, but the Kingpin's first full appearance in this episode, while innocuous, was made all the more effective by the way they built him up in the Pilot

***

I'll be back tomorrow with reviews of the next few episodes.
