it started with the comics, imo. they were well-written and popular there and josh & steph, being fans of the comics, understood how important it was to treat them well in the show. they knew it was important for k/nico as not just a couple, but as individual characters. and they knew how beloved they were by the fanbase.

This is one of the show with the most representation and diversity (of women, ethnicities, sexualities, etc) right now. Together with stuff like euphoria.
