Yeah, then it would of been like a horror movie. Showing him alone for a year and losing his mind showed more of where he was coming from and made him more sympathetic.

Jim could not have saved the Avalon by himself, if he had never woke up Aurora. two years later, when Deck Chief Gus Mancuso was awakened, he would have found no one, because Jim would have stepped out the air lock, having not woken up Aurora, and have gone stark raving mad from loneliness and despair. Gus and the Avalon would have perished in the void, because Gus would have died from his pod-caused injuries regardless, and the ship would have blown apart after he died.

Jim's decision to wake up Aurora, regardless of the morality of it, ultimately saved themselves and the ship, crew, and passengers. Jim also enabled Aurora to have her life of adventure and a great writer's story for posterity.
