Harley Quinn Movie: Margot Robbie Teases an R-Rated Spinoff | Collider

“I pitched the idea of an R-rated girl gang film including Harley, because I was like, ‘Harley needs friends.’ Harley loves interacting with people, so don’t ever make her do a standalone film. She’s got to be with other people, it should be a girl gang. I wasn’t seeing enough girl gangs on screen, especially in the action space. So that was always a big part of it.

“And then of course having a female director to tell that story. And giving a female director the chance to do big budget stuff. They always get ‘Here’s the tiny little film’… I was like, ‘I love action. I love action films. I’m a girl. What, are we meant to only like a specific thing’?” So it was a hugely important to find a female director for this, if possible. But at the end of the day — male, female — the best director gets the job and Cathy was the best director.

“I want to make a girl gang, R-rated film that Harley is a part of,” Robbie explained, “And we started working on it from there. Meanwhile, over the course of the next few years, the studio was exploring other Harley Quinn spin-offs. But I was not a part of those versions, I was always focused on this one with Christina… I know that they were exploring ‘Gotham City Sirens’ with David Ayer, and I know they were exploring a Joker and Harley Quinn movie, and they were exploring doing I don’t know what else. I wasn’t a part of those. I was focusing on this. I kept presenting it to the studio until they felt it was at a point where they were ready to do it. And now we’re all in.”

'Suicide Squad' Sequel Gets New Writers

David Bar Katz and Todd Stashwick are penning the script with director Gavin O'Connor. There's are a few new faces joining the Suicide Squad crew. David Bar Katz and Todd Stashwick are co-writing the script for the Suicide Squad sequel alongside director Gavin O'Connor, sources confirm to The Hollywood Reporter. The film is a followup to the 2016 DC hit that starred Will Smith, Margot Robbie and Jared Leto and was directed by David Ayer. Katz is known for his Black List script The Man in the Rockefeller Suit, and has multiple features in development, including Chasing Phil with Robert Downey Jr.'s Team Downey and Warner Bros. He also has comic book experience, performing a rewrite on New Line's Spawn as well as penning the play The History of Invulnerability, which is about the creation of Superman. He also penned a Jason Bateman comedy for Universal about two undercover FBI agents. Stashwick comes from the acting world and has worked on Fox's Batman prequel Gotham, as well as SyFy's 12 Monkeys. He recently revealed he was working on the Suicide Squad 2 script and describes himself as a lifelong DC fan. Warner Bros. is eager to move forward with a sequel to Suicide Squad, which may have struggled with critics, but earned $746 million worldwide. Legend of Tarzan's Adam Cozad had previously worked on a script to the sequel. Warner Bros. has multiple projects at various stages of development in the works with Suicide Squad characters, including several that could star Robbie's Harley Quinn and Leto's Joker. No release dates have been set for any of them. Katz is repped by CAA and Untitled Entertainment. Stashwick is repped by APA and Meghan Schumacher Management.

WB’s ‘Birds of Prey’ Movie Could Shoot In LA and Atlanta Early Next Year

Warner Bros. is seemingly going all in with their DC Comics standalone films and we have a slight update concerning the progress being made on their Harley Quinn/Birds of Prey movie that has director Cathy Yan attached and script from Christina Hodson. Omega Underground has word that the studio is possibly eyeing locations for the film which include Atlanta/Savannah, Georgia and Los Angeles, California. Our friends at DiscussingFilm have also learned that the DC Comics film could begin filming as early as January of next year. Todd stashwick: We have finished our draft and i’m really proud of it. Vaguely, in about one sentence if you could, what may fans expect from ‘suicide squad 2’? Todd stashwick: It’s a sequel to the first film. Again, i can’t say anything else. Our intention is to tell an exciting story, deepening these characters.
