Sigur Rós - Campaign Thread

welcome to the campaign thread of,

"From day one, Sigur Rós have demonstrated that affecting compositions
are not the exclusive domain of the virtuoso,
by layering simple melodies to create songs that are more moving than the sum of their parts,, - PopMatters

Supporters List

3. Ash_lost
4. goodnightboy
5. gagasim
6. Heartattack&Vine

(if you wanna be added, just ask)

"Things just go from mad galloping gobbledigook to spongy sentiment,, - Tiny Mix Tapes

Sigur Rós are an Icelandic post-rock band with melodic, classical and minimalist elements.

Vonlenska is a term used to describe the gibberish sung by the band, in particular Birgisson.
It is also commonly known by the English translation of its name, Hopelandic.
It takes its name from “Von”, a song on Sigur Rós’s debut album Von where it was first used.

Vonlenska is not a real language as it lacks a consistent grammar structure,
word meaning, or even distinct words as such.
Instead, it consists of meaningless syllables and resembles scat singing; the band’s website describes it as “a form of gibberish vocals that fits to the music”.
Most of the syllable strings sung by Birgisson are repeated many times
throughout each song, and in the case of ( ), throughout the whole album.

Members

- Jón Þór “Jónsi” Birgisson – vocals, guitar, bowed guitar, keyboards, harmonica, banjo
- Georg “Goggi” Hólm – bass guitar, glockenspiel
- Kjartan “Kjarri” Sveinsson – keyboard, piano, organs, guitar, flute, tin whistle, oboe, banjo (1998–present)
- Orri Páll Dýrason – drums, keyboards (1999–present)

"Our music is just a roll of accidents..."
Georg on how clumsiness can create sonic beauty.

- Von (1997) and von brigði (1998)
- Ágætis byrjun (1999)
- ( ) (2002)
- Takk... (2005)
- Heima and Hvarf-Heim (2007)
- Með suð ê eyrum við spilum endalaust (2008)

"The band achieves a new unity in variety here,
winding from near-glam romp and fireside-folk warmth to
slow-climb grandeur with an attention to the repeated payoff
in a sturdy hook and hum-along chorus,, - Rolling Stone about
'Med sud I eyrum vid spilum endalaust'

"Once, this band were making music to stare skywards to,
to contemplate the vastness of the universe we’re such a tiny part of;
now they’ve discovered a hidden reserve of human spirit,
sucked it in and produced a record
that will reconnect their wealth of talents to listeners fearing they’d forgotten how
they’d ever reached such a lofty pedestal.
It’s great to have them back,, - Drowned In Sound

I'm surprised they got 13 votes already. I've tempted to request SR many times but I never got the balls to do it, because I didn't think it would get more than 4 votes. People here at FF are more fond of the mainstream stuff. I think it's awesome we got that many votes.

Thanks for the add!

SR is definitely not mainstream, but I would never want them to be. They have some of the most beautiful music ever made.

Lucky, getting to see them live!

Hi! Wow I was shocked to see SR on the polls. I mean, I love them but I didn't think people here really liked SR. Cool! And you saw them live - that must've been awesome anyway I voted and it's incredible seeing them with 18 votes already.

If you want, join us over at the appreciation thread over at the Music board! We'd LOVE to have you guys over, the more fans the better, always. We're lovely people who don't bite!

Thats a nice idea and thank you for voting. Want me to add you on the list ?

Its hard not to like them yes Ash. Their music is like a poet. I mean when a man is using a string on a guitar, you're like OMG.

and Jón Þór is the most adorable, cutest singer ever on stage. he was so ashamed, it was great. but with sigur ros its just about the music and we had confetti aswell. AWESOME.

some pics of the concert.

Hey guys, love the OP and love SR as well!!!
Like you said, what a surprise, so many (now 21!) voted for SR! that's unbelievable.

LostforJate, where did you see them? I saw them in Arras, France, and I'm going to see them in november in Paris, can't wait!!!!

I would hate for them to go mainstream: 1st, because that might mean changing their music to match the mainstream demands, 2nd cause I would miss having the priviledge to know and love a band that is appreciated mostly by music afficionados and "connaisseurs"! It sometimes feels like a secret club, although there's nothing secret to it....

Exactly. They're so unique and create such beautiful sounds that I've never heard from any other band.

21 votes is awesome!

yes indeed. and we haven't even talked about the language they use.

Welcome gagasim (i'll add you)

They came to Belgium twice this summer. Two festivals.
One called: 'Rock Werchter' the other 'Pukkelpop' and both were (i only went to the second but saw some on youtube and friends said it was great)

2nd row or something and i caught Orri's drumstick !!! and sudenly Five people grabbed it. We fought for 5minutes or something but then they grabbed their cigarettes and wanted to burn us and after some more fighting i let go.

People are really crazy sometimes! I'm sorry you couldn't keep the drumstick though!

I heard about the first festival, not the second though. There also was 2 festivals in France, but I didn't go to the second one (la route du Rock in St Malo)

About their language, I think it really works for them, that 90% of their audience do not understand a word they says (they apparently play with that once in a while, I posted a video on the SR thread, where we see Jonsi saying stuff like "it doesn't matter what I say, they don't understand a word we say!" because he forgot the words of a song. and I gotta say, i really don't care, I don't even check the translation for each song. The meaning of the text is really the last thing that matters in their music for me. They sometimes even talk in Hopelandic a language they invented, really shows they care about the sound of the voice and the words on the music, and not what they mean.

ETA: LostforJate do you speak French or Dutch? maybe you do speak both?
