While the producers are remaining extremely quiet about his role on the show, we do know that he will be playing the role of a charismatic gay student from a rival Glee club. Many are speculating that his character could become the new love interest to Kurt (Chris Colfer). In his senior year of college, Darren and his friends from the University of Michigan created a Harry Potter musical parody called “A Very Potter Musical” as a fun project for their classmates, friends and other Harry Potter fans. Along with starring as the boy wizard himself, Darren also leant several of his songs to be used in the show. Within weeks of posting the musical online, it started to become a YouTube sensation garnering millions of views, and sparked a rather substantial cult following. Using this show as a springboard, Darren and his writing partners from Michigan started the company StarKid Productions, and has completed work on two new shows in the past year as an actor and composer, with a new musical currently in pre-production slated for 2011. The company itself has an impressively large and devoted fanbase online, with roughly 20,000 Twitter followers and over 70,000 Facebook fanpage members. This loyal fanbase has helped Darren and StarKid debut on three separate Billboard charts– through three separate releases– all within the past year. These include the #11 spot on Billboard’s Top Cast Albums, with their cast soundtrack for the original musical “Me and My Dick,” along with the #30 spot on Billboard’s Heatseekers chart with his self released EP “Human,” and finally, the #19 spot on the Top Compilations chart with “A Very StarKid Album.” With so many different categories, Darren’s success on the charts has defied typical genre gaps. The EP, “Human,” was released as a low-key, acoustic collection of 5 original songs, differing greatly from the more Broadway-type music found on the “Me and My Dick” soundtrack, not to mention the pop-rock stylings featured on “A Very Starkid Album,” which consisted of 13 popular songs featured from various StarKid projects (all of which Darren wrote). As a child, Darren played a variety of instruments including violin, guitar, piano, and drums. Growing up, he played drums in a small band with his brother, Chuck, until Chuck moved to New York and joined the popular indie band, Freelance Whales, while Darren went on to pursue his acting degree in the midwest. As a songwriter, Darren has been able to draw on his life, relationships, loves, and quirky outlook to pen heartfelt, tender, and raw songs– all of which range anywhere from the styles of soul, folk, and rock, to jazz standards and even classic show tunes.
