That's still worse for me, hearing it even if it's not shown. But I'm sort of glad they didn't show it because that's too much.

All I remember from that scene is Selyse just watching in horror and even she can't do anything about it. Even now while we're re-watching S3, Stannis is already nuts. By the time that happened, it was the icing in the cake for him.

There was no coming back from that... Stannis really lost his mind by then! Even Selyse being that heartless mother showed a bit of guilty and tried to reach out to Shireen...

I don't remember much of Selyse but from what little we got of her, it also goes to show that she let Stannis be this way and never questioned his motives. Is it because she's a woman and that she's also scared of Stannis?

She was an awful woman... always treating Shireen very badly... I don't think she was afraid of Stannis, more like very submissive

Yeah women are not portrayed very well on this show. They're usually submissive or abused. If only Selyse wasn't the way she is, then she would've questioned everything that Stannis was doing and probably even banish him but it would be difficult since he's the ruler and people just don't listen to women who aren't in power on this show.
