I'm actually glad it wasn't the usual trope of being the outsider or not treated like family (basic example is Cinderella). We've had too much of those in media and for once it was nice to see this genuinely good person treated like he was their real family even though he wasn't in the eyes of everyone else.

And making them care about the "bastard" made it easier to relate and sympathize with the Starks in general

I actually don't hate Catelyn. She's allowed to feel that way towards Jon and it wasn't like she was outwardly cruel towards him.

And also it's what everyone knows, that Ned had Jon with a whore. It also speaks a lot about how the Starks view commitment, trust & loyalty within their family and with others. Like Ned is loyal if we think about it and so is Catelyn. The fall of their family is also because they're so trusting of others..
