Meet the New Princess Anne on Netflix’s ‘The Crown’

Netflix recently announced that Erin Doherty will play the daughter of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip in the upcoming third season. (You may recognize her as Jessie from Call the Midwife.) Doherty will replace Lyla Barrett-Rye, who portrayed Princess Anne in seasons one and two.

The announcement should come as no surprise to fans, considering the series has been recasting its roles due to a time jump. Netflix already announced that Olivia Colman will portray Queen Elizabeth (previously played by Claire Foy), Tobias Menzies will play Prince Philip (previously played by Matt Smith) and Helena Bonham Carter will take on the role of Princess Margaret (previously played by Vanessa Kirby).

According to Ted Sarandos, content chief of Netflix, this won’t be the last time they recast The Crown. “This is going to take Queen Elizabeth from age 29 to, presumably, the current day. We’ll see it lay out over decades,” he said in a statement in 2016. “The idea is to do this over six decades in six seasons, presumably, and make the whole show [run] over eight to 10 years.”

Welcome to the party, Erin…for now. Season three of The Crown is expected to premiere on Netflix sometime in 2019.

It bugged me where I’d seen Ben Daniels before so I googled him and realised he was in Law and Order UK. He’s a good actor so he should be great in this
