yeah, that was the only thing I could think of
 I know it's hard for most men to accept that women could be above them in any way, but maybe it wouldn't have bothered him so much if he'd been allowed to do more things he wanted as the partner of the current monarch__________________

Maybe he felt he was submitting to his wife? But still I can't imagine why that would be an issue. Unless he had a lot of pride and felt he should be king.
