So he left lucille outside while he was with Carl, and he almost forgot it when Rick has her too.

He had an interesting relationship with Carl because he liked to push him like he does with other but at a difference he does care about Carl and respected him. In his own Negan way.

Yep, but I think with Rick it was a mix of torturing him and overconfidence that Rick wouldn't do anything while with Carl it was a result of him truly being caught unawares.

I honesty think the reason why he cares about Carl, and now Judith, is because of being a teacher. He naturally knows how to deal with kids because he did it for so long. Plus he was hard on his students, so I think that's part of where his authority came in.

The grimes men have a way of distracting him I guess.

That's probably a part of it I think he also has in his own way a moral compass like he'll do a lot of messed up stuff but there's lines he won't cross like hurting kids or sexually attacking/abusing women.
