'Killing Eve' Star Jodie Comer Joins Ryan Reynolds in 'Free Guy' (Exclusive)

Ryan Reynolds and Shawn Levy have found some more players for their video game-focused action-comedy Free Guy.

Jodie Comer, who stars in the critical darling television show Killing Eve, will star opposite Reynolds, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter. Also joining the feature project in supporting roles are Lil Rel, who broke out with Get Out, and Stranger Things star Joe Keery.

Levy is directing the project, which has a greenlight from 20th Century Fox and is scheduled to begin shooting in April 2019. The greenlight of Free Guy now means that Levy steps away from Uncharted, the long-gestating adaptation of the video game set up at Sony. A new director is being sought for the latter, to which Tom Holland remains attached to star.

Written by Matt Lieberman and picked up as a spec script in 2016, Free Guy centers on a background character who realizes he’s living in a video game. With the help of an avatar, he tries to prevent the makers of the game from shutting down his world.

Comer will play the avatar, whose name is Molotov Girl. In the real world, she is a mousy programmer who actually created the game but was devastated when it was stolen from her.

Not (8) bit players: Rel is Reynolds's best friend and fellow Non-Playable Character who doesn't believe his friend's seemingly outlandish claims. Keery is a programmer who may or may not have a secret agenda.

Levy and Reynolds are producing as are Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter. Adam Kolbrenner is also a producer. Reynolds will produce via his Maximum Effort label, while Levy will produce via 21 Laps. George Dewey is executive producing.

Comer is best known for her role as the assassin Villanelle in BBC America's Killing Eve. The British actress has become quite in demand thanks to the breakout status of the show, fielding offers and interest from filmmakers and studios. Free Guy will mark the Stateside feature film debut.

Rel starred on NBC's The Carmichael Show and played dependable TSA agent Rod Williams in Jordan Peele's Get Out. Keery (and his hair) made him a breakout as Steve Harrington on Netflix's Stranger Things. He also appeared in Molly's Game.
