Jean Valjean adopted Cosette from an abusive innkeeper after her mother died of tuberculosis. He took her in because he felt guilty for her mother dying. He found little Cosette as she was collecting well water in the middle of the snowy woods. Valjean and Cosette spent the next ten years on the run because Valjean was being pursued by a police inspector.
