Where Are They Now?

This is what happens when you subscribe to Sports Illustrated.

I received this week's issue today and the cover title caught my eye. Before reading the magazine in its entirety, I turned to the articles discussing the main headline, which featured popular sports athletes, past and present (known for their game, among other things) and what they are currently doing. You know, life after sports. Imagine that! Ha.

Just to mention a few, here are some of the names on the list. Any ring a bell?

Bo Jackson
Nancy Kerrigan
Tonya Harding
Mary Lou Retton
Jerry Lucas
Mickey Rivers
Chuck Wepner
Carl Banks

So, I'm curious. Have you ever wondered about certain athletes, maybe one of your favorites? You know, have you thought about where they are now and what they are doing, after their playing career was over? If you have, which athletes?

I am looking forward to reading the various responses. Thanks!

Chuck Knoblauch He just sorta dissapeared, at least I'm not informed as to what he's doing or whatever. Miss him.

And yeah, those names ring a bell. Makes me wonder. They usually come out in stuff like "Where are they now?" ESPN style

I think Chuck Knoblauch is out of the league. I know that he played as a utility LF for the Kansas City Royals the past few seasons, but I’m pretty sure he called it a career after last year. Man, it’s sad to see what happened to him! It was not that long ago that he was an All-Star 2B for the Minnesota Twins. Then he goes to the Yankees and can’t make the simple throw to first base. It’s like he lost it all just like that. Definitely a mental thing. Rick Ankiel is in the same boat.

Bo Jackson. I know that he has a home in the Chicagoland area and owns his own business. Beyond that, I’m not really sure. He shows up at Chicago sporting events a lot, so it seems as though he’s kept ties with this city after his playing days with the White Sox ended.

Tonya Harding. It’s sad that I know this, but she’s now a professional female boxer. Just right up her alley, huh?

Here are some names to add to the list:

Harold Miner
Bill Pulsipher
Alexander Daigle
Charles O’Bannon
Ryan Leaf
Bo Kimble
Shawn Respert

Man, alot of those names ring a bell.

Bo Jackson: I still remember those "Bo Knows" commercials for Nike. And the one image I'll always remember about Bo is him breaking his bat over his knee after striking out. Classic!

Alexander Daigle: This dude was the biggest bust of all-time! He was supposed to be the saviour of the Ottawa Senators, but didn't come close! The last I heard he was in LA trying to get his acting career off the ground.

Charles O'Bannon: Did this guy have a brother named Ed? I remember during the '95 NBA draft, all the fans in Toronto were chanting "We want Ed! We want Ed!" We ended up taking Damon Stoudamire, though.

Oops, I meant to say Ed O’Bannon! But, yes, he did have a younger bro named Charles who played with him at UCLA. Both guys never made it in the NBA. Ed turned out to be a HUGE bust, though. He was supposed to be a great prospect, and was even drafted in the first round by NJ. He was out of the league two years later. Last I heard, he was playing in Greece or somewhere.

Chris- I also LOVED Shawn Respert! He was the bombdiggity for MSU back in the mid-90’s. Had one of the sweetest, most pure, strokes in the college game. Too bad he couldn’t create shots on his own. His game was purely standup jump shooter. It killed him in the pros. Quite sad. I had such high hopes when he was drafted by the Milwaukee Bucks.

Sherrell Ford: Another ex-NBA baller whose college game I loved. Kicked ass at UIC! He didn’t spend much time in the league, either. Where did ya go, Mr. Ford?

I guess there is only room for one Steve Kerr in the NBA

Hey, now! That style has earned Kerr five championship rings.

He must be doing something right.
