Here is the first update from the U.S. Open.

First of all, former champions Nole and Venus Williams won their matches in straight sets, while Ashleigh Barty defeated Zarina Diyas 1-6, 6-3, 6-2; Karolina Pliskova defeated Tereza Martincova 7-6(6), 7-6(3); Daniil Medvedev defeated Prajnesh Gunneswaran 6-4, 6-1, 6-2 and Elina Svitolina defeated Whitney Osuigwe 6-1, 7-5.

We already got a couple of upsets as Reilly Opelka defeated Fabio Fognini 6-3, 6-4, 6-7(6), 6-3 and Kristina Mladenovic defeated Angelique Kerber 7-5, 0-6, 6-4. Reilly Opelka is someone that could make a surprise run. He is a another tall big server in the similar vein as John Isner and Dr. Ivo. If the conditions are hot and the courts fast, he could be more than a handful with that big serve.

So that's the story from the early matches at Flushing Meadows. Coming up later in the primetime session, we will get a matchup between former champions in the first match at Arthur Ashe Stadium as six time champion Serena Williams will take on 2006 champion Maria. Once upon a time this would've been a final and instead it's in the first round, given Maria's struggles this year. Following that match, five time champion Fed will face Sumit Nagal. Also over at Louis Armstrong Stadium, Stan will play Jannik Sinner and Madison Keys will take on Misaki Doi.

I really hate when Brad Gilbert commentates a tennis match.

He's beyond irritating.
