I was just checking the score of the Heat/Pistons and I saw this on ESPN.com:

WASHINGTON -- If you think keeping fit is merely mind over matter, Lester Clancy has an invention for you: a cordless jump-rope.

That's right, a jump-rope minus the rope. All that's left is two handles, so you jump over the pretend rope. Or if you are truly lazy, you can pretend to jump over the pretend rope.

And for that idea kicking around Clancy's head since 1988, the U.S. Patent Office this month awarded the 52-year-old Mansfield, Ohio, man a patent. Its number: 7037243.

What makes this invention work is the moving weights inside the handles. They simulate the feel of a rope moving, Clancy said. Well, it's only one handle so far because Clancy is waiting for financial backers before building its partner.

But why jump rope without a rope?

It's perfect for the clumsy, Clancy said. "If you are still jumping, you're still using your legs as well as your arms, and getting the cardiovascular workout. You just don't have to worry about tripping on the rope."

It is also good for mental institutions and prisons where rope is a suicide risk, said Clancy, who works as a laundry coordinator in a state prison. And low ceiling fans aren't a hazard any more, he said.

Daniel Wright, who features the cordless jump-rope on his Web site www.patentlysilly.com, can barely talk about Clancy's invention without laughing.

"What really grabbed me," Wright said, "was the name the item has in its patent."

The idea isn't all that crazy, said Mike Ernst, a professor of kinesiology at California State University in Dominguez Hills.

"I think it's silly, but at the same time if somehow, some way it promotes physical activity, gets kids active, then I'm all for it," Ernst said.

The more he thought about it, the more Ernst said he could see the benefit, adding that the act of jumping, not the rope itself, is what provides exercise.

"Do you need to jump with a rope? You don't," Ernst said. "But I wouldn't buy the product, I can tell you that. I'm not an idiot."

High-tech handles aren't needed. You could even use toilet paper holders, Ernst said. On second thought, he wondered if he could patent that idea.

Isn't Sly coming out with his geriatric sequel to Rocky in the near future? That's even worse than Bruce Willis reviving the Die Hard series all these years later. It's one thing to develop a movie franchise, but this is a going a bit far.

I agree, Rocky went on a bit too far and Die Hard kinda went out weak, IMO but it has been too long. You can't recast Rocky or John McClane, so the only thing you can do is let it stay buried. Not in 2006, nope. Gotta have another American Idol, another movie remake, another next Jordan.

These are the results of a Harris Poll conducted online by Harris Interactive® among a nationwide sample of 2,085 U.S. adults between May 9 and 16, 2006.

Harris Interactive has asked this question of the public almost every year since 1993, and Michael Jordan has been the nation's favorite sports star on every previous occasion.

Other athletes who make it into this year's top-10 list of favorite sports stars (after Tiger Woods and Michael Jordan) are Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre (No. 3), New York Yankees star Derek Jeter (No. 4), race car driver Dale Earnhardt, Jr. (No. 5), the Miami Heat's Shaquille O'Neal (No. 6), LA Lakers star Kobe Bryant (No. 7), Cleveland Cavaliers star LeBron James (No. 8), race car driver Jeff Gordon (No. 9) and San Francisco Giants slugger Barry Bonds (= No. 9). Kobe Bryant returns to the list after dropping off last year and LeBron James, Jeff Gordon and Barry Bonds all appear on the list for the first time.

This top-10 contains an interesting mix of sports stars, with four basketball players, two race car drivers, two baseball players, one golfer and one football player. This is in contrast to last year, when there were five football players -- four of whom (Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Donovan McNabb and Ben Rothlisberger) have dropped out of the top-10 this year.

Regionally, in the East, Derek Jeter is number one, while Barry Bonds tops the list in the West. Brett Favre reigns the Midwest, while Michael Jordan is still the favorite of the South. There are also differences in favorites by generation. Both Echo Boomers (those ages 18 to 29) and Baby Boomers (those ages 42 to 60) still carry a torch for the retired Michael Jordan, while Shaquille O'Neal is number one with Gen Xers (those ages 30 to 41). Matures (those ages 61 and older) say Tiger Woods is their favorite. Considering all of these differences, notably men and women both agree that Tiger Woods is number one.

Favorite female sports stars

Though no female athlete broke into the top-10 this year, the American public has their favorites among them. The Williams sisters top the list with Venus in the number one position and sister Serena in the number two spot. Last year's favorite, Mia Hamm, has fallen to number three in this year's list of top-10 female sports stars.

Following the top three is teen golf sensation Michelle Wie (No. 4), race car driver Danica Patrick (No. 5), figure skater Michelle Kwan (No. 6), golfer Annika Sorenstam (No. 7), tennis player Maria Sharapova (No. 8), tennis player Anna Kournikova (No. 9), and figure skater Sasha Cohen (No. 10).

While men and women have no differences in their favorite overall sports star, there is one in the favorite female category. Men prefer Serena Williams, while Venus is number one among women.

The feat earned Takeru Kobayashi, 27, his sixth straight title in the event, held at the original Nathan's Famous hot dog stand on Brooklyn's seashore. His prize: the coveted Yellow Mustard Belt.

Kobayashi broke his record of 53½ hot dogs, set at the same competition two years ago.

Thousands of raucous spectators jammed the streets in front of the hot dog stand, a block from the famed Coney Island boardwalk, to watch the competition and Kobayashi -- a top-ranked eater who once ate 17.7 pounds of pan-seared cow brains to win $25,000.

His strongest competition was Joey Chestnut, a 220-pound civil engineering student from San Jose, Calif., who set a U.S. record by eating 50 hot dogs during a qualifying tournament in Las Vegas.

Chestnut jumped to an early lead in the competition, sometimes jamming franks into his mouth with two hands as the crowd roared.

But Chestnut struggled, red-faced, with veins bulging in his forehead, as the Japanese star methodically chomped dog after dog, often dipping them in a soft drink before cramming them into his mouth. Kobayashi passed Chestnut with about three minutes left in the contest.

When the clock expired, Chestnut had swallowed 52 Nathan's franks -- not quite enough.

"I hit a wall. I just felt tired," he told ESPN, which broadcast the competition live.

Kobayashi, his hair dyed yellow like a Nathan's billboard, vowed through an interpreter to return next year to conquer even more hot dogs than he did this time.

Among the competitors were another favorite, 100-pound Sonya "The Black Widow" Thomas, of Alexandria, Va., who once ate 65 hard boiled eggs in a little more than 6½ minutes, and a local favorite, Eric "Badlands" Booker, a 425-pound subway conductor from Long Island who holds speed-eating records for pies and matzo balls.

First-time competitor Erik "The Red" Denmark, 28, of Seattle, who downed 22 hot dogs, said he was happy just to be there.

"It's like making it to the World Cup," said Denmark, who can boast of having eating 98 jalapenos in 15 minutes.
