Sports Awards 2004

With the year coming to a close, it's time to look back on the sports year about to pass. And what better way to do that then my handing out some faux-awards? I'll post a couple of categories, but if anyone thinks of any more, feel free to add them:

Team of the Year:
College team of the Year:
Athlete of the Year (male):
Athlete of the Year (female):
Collegiate athlete of the Year (male):
Collegiate athlete of the Year (female):
Coach of the Year:
Surprise of the Year (team):
Surprise of the Year (player):
Disappointment of the Year (team):
Disappointment of the Year (player):
Play of the Year:
Game of the Year:

I'll be back posting mine later. We could do something major out of it, in which case we'll need more categories and nominees and a big award-show, but for now, I suppose just posting your answers here would suffice.

How about including a separate category for best college team of the year?

Done. I added collegiate player of the year (male and female) as well.

Mine:

Team of the Year: Boston Red Sox. Well, it had to be, didn't it?
College team of the Year: UConn Basketball. Two titles, you can't do much better than that.
Athlete of the Year (male): Lance Armstrong.
Athlete of the Year (female): Triathlete Kate Allen for running 10,000 meters outdoors in the Olympics at 34 minutes and change (just four minutes of the indoor world record) after having swam 1,5 kilometers and cycled 40 kilometers.
Collegiate athlete of the Year (male): Ben Roethlisberger.
Collegiate athlete of the Year (female): Diana Taurasi.
Coach of the Year: John Tortorella (Tampa Bay Lightning).
Surprise of the Year (team): The Greek soccer team for winning the European Championship. If not, then the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Surprise of the Year (player): Drew Brees.
Disappointment of the Year (team): Cincinnati Bengals... not that we've performed that bad, but I expected more. If not, then the Chicago Cubs.
Disappointment of the Year (player): Kevan Barlow. 3,3 yards-a-carry? Yeah, thanks, Mr. Second Round Fantasy Draft Pick.
Play of the Year: David Ortiz' HR in Game 4 of the ALDS - without it, then the Red Sox would have endured yet another year of futility.
Game of the Year: Super Bowl XXXVIII.

Team of the Year: New England Patriots (super bowl in February & a record breaking winning streak)
College team of the Year: USC Trojans football
Athlete of the Year (male): Curt Schilling
Athlete of the Year (female): Mia Hamm even if she is married to Nomah
Collegiate athlete of the Year (male): Jameer Nelson, St. Josephs
Collegiate athlete of the Year (female): Diana Taurasi, UConn
Coach of the Year: Bill Belichick (ironically my 2nd choice is the man Bill replaced, Pete Carroll)
Surprise of the Year (team): Detroit Pistons
Surprise of the Year (player): Johan Santana
Disappointment of the Year (team): KC Chiefs
Disappointment of the Year (player): I wanted to say all NHL players, but Ron Artest has just surpassed them for obvious reasons.
Play of the Year: A-Rod being called out for interference in game 6 of the ALCS
Game of the Year: Super Bowl 38

BTW I think using this list to create nominees is a good idea. We still have a couple months left in the year, so these answers are subject to change.
