Some Roger news..

ATP - ROGER WITHDRAWS FROM STOCKHOLM

Roger announced today that he will not be participating in the Stockholm Open which starts next Monday.

"2008 has been a tough year for me as I was always playing catch up after being diagnosed with mononucleosis at the beginning of the year. I feel fortunate to be healthy again, but I want to remain at the top of the game for many more years to come and go after the #1 ranking again. In order to do that, I need to get a proper rest and get strong again so that I am 100% fit for the remainder of the year or next year. At this point, I am not sure when I will be ready to play again, but I hope to be back at some point before the end of the year. I apologize to the tennis fans in Sweden as I was looking forward to playing in Stockholm again. The country has produced so many incredible tennis players and the tournament has such a great history. I hope to be able to come back at some point in the future."
I wouldnt be surprised if he took all of October off, to be honest. For Roger to recuperate now, and and regain fitness to his optimal level will be far more important in the grand scheme of things. He is being smart.

Get plenty of rest, Roger

ATP - MADRID: ROGER FACES STEPANEK

After a bye in the first round, Roger will play Radek Stepanek (CZE/30) at the Madrid Masters on Wednesday.

Roger holds a 5-2 record over Stepanek, but lost to the Czech in the Rome quarter-finals last May in a pair of tie-break sets. But he got his revenge three months later with a US Open third-round victory.

After Roger's victory in Madrid in 2006, he was beaten in the final by Argentina's David Nalbandian (ATP 7) at last year's event. His potential remaining path to the semifinals includes Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the third round and either Juan Martin Del Potro (ARG/9) or above mentioned David Nalbandian in the quarters.

Other players in Roger`s half are Andy Murray (GBR/4) and Andy Roddick (USA/6). Rafael Nadal and Novak Djovkovic were placed in the upper half of the draw.

ATP - ROGER BACK IN STYLE

Roger returned from his five-week break to beat Radek Stepanek (ATP 30), 6-3, 7-6 (6), yesterday in the second round of the Madrid Masters.

"I think I moved with a spring in my step. My feeling out there was positive and confident which is a good feeling to have in the first match which tends to be very tricky," Roger said after the match.

Roger had a perfect start and took a 3-0 lead as Stepanek's serve fell apart. But the world number 30 stepped up in the second set, winning all but one of the points on his first serve, and seized the advantage in the set decider. But our champ did what he can do so well: increase the pressure in critical moments. He rallied from a 5-3 deficit in the tiebreaker with some excellent shotmaking, including a backhand that landed in the far corner on match point. Roger went on to take the tie break 8-6 and the match in one hour and 26 minutes.

Up next for Roger.. Tsonga! Should be an interesting match, they have never played against one another before!

Got that right!

ATP - THROUGH IN STRAIGHT SETS

Roger'sbid to win the Madrid Masters remains on course as he downed 16th seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France in straight sets to clinch a quarter-final spot.

It was the the first time Roger and Tsonga faced each other. "It's hard to face a player you've never met before, that's why I worked a little bit harder at the beginning," our champ said. "It was like playing a box fight, he always hit first."

Roger proved too good for his younger opponent, beating the Australian Open finalist 6-4 6-1 in just over an hour. Now, he will clash against Juan Martin del Potro; they met twice, and our 13-time Grand Slam champion won both without dropping a set.

asking the fans to be careful...

His QF is against Del Poltro
