For anyone here from Basel...

Quote:
ROGER'S WELCOME HOME PARTY
Roger's official welcome home party will take place in Basel on Thursday, September 11th. Not only will Roger be there, but also Stan Wawrinka as his doubles partner will celebrate their gold medal.

Start of the event will be at 5 p.m. on the market square in the middle of town. Video clips of past matches and great moments will be projected onto a giant screen. Roger and Stan will be welcome on a stage by various officials and will be questioned to different images shown. The happening will include prizes, goodies and surprises for the crowd, free coffee and activities. The entire event can take place thanks to the generous support of Nationale Suisse.

What an awesome heroes welcome home That's the biggest crowd that I've seen for a celebrity or an athlete BTW, it'd be a travesty if Roger doesn't get the #1 rank back after the USO win.

Davis cup presser and practice pics!

This is so cute..

I was reading that it is not yet decided whether he will play the doubles with Stan or Yves. I mean, I know Yves is his usual doubles DC partner, but...he was so good with Stan at the olympics, they gotta keep that going

Well congrats to the Swiss boys, Stan and Roger, and the Swiss Davis cup team. Stan and Roger both won their matches today. Stan needing 5 sets, Roger winning in straight sets

Doubles tomorrow, which I hope we see the return of the Golden boys

Quote:
Switzerland takes 2-0 lead on home soil

Switzerland is close to making an immediate return to the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas World Group. After securing the opening point thanks to Stanislas Wawrinka’s victory, Roger Federer gave the home fans in Lausanne reasons to cheer by beating Kristof Vliegen 76(1) 64 62.

While Wawrinka had needed five sets and more than four hours to dispose of Steve Darcis, Federer made pretty quick work of Vliegen. However, the 26-year-old from Maaseik, played well and took the early break in the two first sets by converting his only two chances with courageous play. The Swiss maestro came up with quick answers and was clearly stronger on the important points. "That's why he is the king of the game," Vliegen said.

Federer takes control

In the third set, the scenario changed. Federer took his opponent’s serve immediately and never looked back. He sealed his 25th singles win in Davis Cup after two hours and one minute and barely needed half the time that Wawrinka had spent on the court.

Federer’s start to the indoor season was solid to say the least. He hit no less than 44 winners and was backed by a serve of high quality (73 per cent). The perfectionist wasn't happy with all parts of his game, however. "I struggled a bit to find the rhythm from the baseline because of the adjustments from outdoor to indoor. Eventually, I was able to make them then," said the world No. 2.

Lausanne, a special place

For the winner of 13 Grand Slams, the rare matches in Lausanne are often special. Back in 2004, he had his first appearance as world No. 1 in the Centre Intercommunal de Glace, this time it was his first match on home turf as Olympic champion. What is so special about Lausanne for Roger Federer? "I grew up here a little bit. I was here between 14 and 16. I was away from home, playing at the site of the federation, I learned the French language here, I got homesick here. And then Stan is born here, that makes it extra special."

With a comfortable 2-0 lead after the first day, Switzerland now has three matches to secure their spot among the world's best 16 teams, which they certainly deserve. The first chance will come up in Saturday's doubles, which will feature either the Olympic champions Federer and Wawrinka or Federer and Yves Allegro. The captain Severin Lüthi, who is very often on tour with Federer as well, couldn't have hoped for a better start. "That's exactly what we wanted," said Luthi.

There will be plenty of reason to celebrate in any case as the gold medallists from Beijing will be honoured prior to the doubles match with a special celebration. The whole city will be in a celebratory mood and Federer hopes for that as well but also knows that he and the team will have to keep the tension high. "I like the fact that I have two chances to close out the tie. We already want to do it on Saturday and will definitely not underestimate our opponents. I am looking forward to a great weekend."

Pics from Roger's match..
