| Poll of the Day: Should Bonds Have an Asterisk Next to His Name in the Record Books? With the fallout of the BALCO scandal coming to a head, Bonds has admitted to using products that he didn't know were steroids. Whether or not you believe him is up to debate. However, if he's been juiced up the past few seasons, it begs the following question. Question: Should Bonds have an asterisk next to his name in the record books? A. Yes B. | A. Yes If MLB originally put an asterisk next to Maris' HR record in '61 because he accomplished the feat in more games than Babe Ruth, then a much more serious offense deserves the same punishment. The sad thing is that Bonds has an incredible eye and didn't need the steroids to begin with. He might not have hit as many home runs, but he certainly would have left a lasting legacy. Since MLB didn't institute a ban on steroids until last year, I'm sure there will be a loophole in record-keeping once all the sordid revelations come out. __________________ "Government, even in its best state is but a necessary evil; in its worst state an intolerable one." | |||

| A. Yes And for him to say that he didn't know that they were steroids. Does he think we're dumb? Of course he knew what he was taking. __________________ "If you can't beat these stiffs, you shouldn't be playing basketball."-Doug Moe, former head coach of the Denver Nuggets | |||

| Yes, if he was on stereoids when he did it. Whether or not he knew that he took them is irrelevant - what matters is that he had an unfair advantage towards pitchers (assuming the pitchers themselves were clean). __________________ "We learned more from a three minute record than we ever learned in school." | |||

| Say it ain's so, Barry! Say it ain't so! ![]() Man, I've been a big Barry Bonds fan since his days with the Pirates. When I was younger, I remember buying all his baseball cards at card conventions (his rookie cards were way undervalued back then). And whenever I played any fantasy baseball games I'd always take Bonds. So it's kinda hard for me to see Bonds in the mess he's in now. As for the question, I don't think it really matters if baseball puts an asterisk on his record or not. Most people already have their minds made up either way. But I say, if you want, put an asterisk on his record from 2000 and on (which seems to be the time when he was on the juice). But don't discount what he did from 1986 to 1999. I'm pretty sure he was clean back then, and during that time he was arguably the best player in the game (best in the 90s for sure). I looked at his stats before the 2000 season and his numbers looked like this (1986-1999): .288 Batting Average 2010 Hits 445 Homeruns 1299 RBI 1455 Runs 460 Stolen Bases 8 time All-Star 8 time Gold Glove 3 time NL MVP (should have won 4, finished second to Terry Pendleton in '91) 1 of three players in the 40-40 club ('96 season had 42 HR, 40 SB) __________________ I never sleep, cause sleep is the cousin of death. -Nas | |||

My answer is YES! This is discouraging but above of all is punishable--as it should be! He didn't know? Even if I were to believe that I'd be in favor of the asterik. Bonds used something that enhanced his ability to hit home runs over his teammates and the rest of the League. That merits asteriks because we will never know if he could've been equally succesful without the 'roids. Plus his credibility is shattered and now his timeline for the use of this supplements can't really be taken as truthful without some serious confirmartion. To me, this puts the issue on "between him and God" territory. *shakes head* They'll never learn. __________________ Maybe this time I'll speak the words of life, with Your fire in my eyes... | I don't know, putting an asterisk next to his name not only diminshes the accomplishments of a lot of god given talent but the substances he took weren't banned/illegal at the time. So...I guess I'm kind of divided on the issue, I don't see it as a black and white, yes or no, question. That said, I do think what Barry did was wrong...when the season starts, I don't think that I will be giving him the kind of fervent support I've given him in the past. I just don't know that I want his entire career discounted by what's happening to him now. Although, it undoubtly will in the minds of many. And understandably so. | Well,... it's not like he's a runningback just running over people. He'd still have to hit the ball, which is said to be the hardest thing in sports. __________________ "I am way curious as to how a Best Rapper Alive contest can include the likes of Soulja Boy Tell ‘Em, Shawty Lo and Flo Rida, but not list lyrical geniuses Rakim, MC Lyte, Chuck D, KRS-One or Slick Rick."
