New York Yankees #31: The Final Season, Goodbye Yankee Stadium

WELCOME to the New York Yankees Thread!

~Golden Rule~

Don't Bash The Yankees

~Story of the Thread~

This thread dates back to the 2001 World Series. Before we lost to the Arizona Diamondback - as we watched the Playoffs, DJ's awesome plays included - Yankee fans gathered in the old Request thread to request a Yankee board (how pretentious, huh? ). Of course, we didn't have enough votes to get one so we decided to start our own thread here in the Sports Board.

26 World Championships? We'll try to do better next century. The thing is though, we love them nonetheless...

I don't have the slightest idea who pitches if he can't... not that he'll probably be all that effective if he does go, anyway.

Edit: Now they do know. Shoulder tendonitis. 15 day DL for Giese.

Seriously, the DL-ness of this season has to be some kind of cruel joke.

The DL is the place to be it seems.

Boston won yesterday again, so much trouble. So much to overcome.

JFC, we can't even get our number one draft pick signed this season.

My heart was ripped out and stepped on. Oh man. When Justin was picked off, I knew we were done but still I dared to hope. I think we're truly done.

We are DONE there are no words to descibe how i feel about this horrible season. WTF happened to this team? It's unbelievable how bad they are this season. No playoffs no hope for the world series.

If we don't make the postseason (which I've pretty much resigned myself to) it'll be the first time since I've been watching baseball and gotten into baseball that the Yanks don't make the postseason.

It's just sad to have such a dissapointing season in the last year at the stadium.

I don't even care about winning in the post, I'd honestly just be thrilled if they could just make it in. But I don't think they will right now, and it's a sad feeling cuz I have NEVER lost hope in them the way I did after last night's game. UGH.

I'd like to say that maybe they can still surprise me, but I just don't see it happening.

I'm disappointed too because it is the last year on the Stadium. They were bound to miss the Playoffs sometimes, but I was hoping it wasn't this year.

Joe Torre pulled some late season miracles, but that was him, now without him, that Yankee mystique is a little lost.

The players played better last year. Last year was a better team and didn't have this degree of health problems/decline on it.

Torre didn't take anything with him, especially given how he's managed out in LA, despite having a very good deal of talent in a downright terrible division this year. If he was still here, we'd very likely be worse, because while Girardi hasn't been close to perfect and at times done some dumb things, he's still done a better job than Torre did the last few years just based on his management of the pitching staff alone.

Then again, maybe we'd have been better off being worse and getting to protect our pick next year from FA compensation (not that our inability to sign Cole this year makes that at the moment look like much...).

I agree, but like someone on ESPN said, "Torre always wins." Wether that statement will still be true after this season is yet to be seen, but the man always found a way to get us into the Playoffs.

I love Girardi, I think he's been super-human at times the way the team has played and with all the injuries, but Torre has a certain 'magic' that I can't deny. Maybe Girardi will find his magic soon.

Gardner having the game winner is so sweet!

I was shocked yesterday didn't expect them to get that win but atleast they got the win finally. I agree about Joe Torre he was the best and no one can say he wasn't, Joe Girardi is good but not the best but i still like him all the same.

If Torre was all that magical why aren't the Dodgers, a team with that talent potential, running away with the by far worst division in baseball? Why did it take adding one of the greatest RH hitters of all time for them to improve? Why was he such an epic failure as a manager before he went to teams that had extremely high levels of ability?

He was a very good manager for the part of his run here and a pretty bad one for last, making the playoffs or not, but regardless of that, our run was because we were incredibly talented teams most of those years and got a lot of luck along the way. We're not this year, for a variety of reasons, and we've gotten probably the crappiest luck in all of MLB, and that has extremely little to do with whoever our manager is and what "magic" he has.

Edit: You know what would make this year less salt-in-a-gaping-would feeling? If the Yankees could get Mussina to 20 wins. He's the only one on this team this year probably without fault for where they are and one 20 win season would pretty much solidify his already deserving HOF credentials.
