Update on Daijiro Kato´s accident at Suzuka

MotoGP officials Paul Butler (Race Director) and Claudio Macchiagodena (Medical Director) offered the following statement regarding the incident involving Japanese rider Daijiro Kato at today´s SKYY VODKA Grand Prix of Japan at the Suzuka Circuit.

Paul Butler: `We don´t know what caused the crash, but what we all know is that it was in the braking zone approaching the chicane. There are no marks on the track and, as we always do in these cases, we have reviewed the video evidence from the live television feed and the closed circuit cameras but frankly we are none the wiser to what caused this very tragic accident to happen. This accident could have occurred at any circuit in the world. I would like to add that we are all thinking about Kato-san at this time and our sincere thoughts go out to his family, friends and team.´

I just went to the official site and they still haven't given any further updates. Last night they were saying that he was in a coma. Hope that he can pull through.

I just saw this at AS.com:

Quote:
DAIJIRO KATO PASSES AWAY AFTER TWO WEEKS IN COMMA

The Japanese pilot has passed away after two weeks in comma after the accident suffered in the GP of Japan disputed in Suzuka.

TWO WEEKS IN COMMA. After a spectacular accident the Japanese pilot entered comma, state in which has remained 13 days. Katoh has passed away by a shutdown cardiaca.(REUTERS/ERIKO SUGITA)

Japanese pilot Daijiro Kato, of 27 years, passed away today in the hospital Medical Mie Center de Yokkaichi due to irreversible a cardiac shutdown after fighting against the death during thirteen days since he underwent a very serious fall in the circuit of Suzuka, the past 6 of April, while he disputed the Great Prize of Japan de MotoGP, first test of the Championship.

The state of the pilot of Sling, after falling and hitting against a wall located to little distance of the edge of the layout, was critical. It did not breathe and it had to be reanimated in the quickly transferred track and in helicopter to the hospital. The doctors gave a 15 percent him of possibilities of surviving and, to do it, it would be left tetrapléjico of nose for down and would need attended breathing.

The shock divided by two sites the helmet of Kato and underwent very serious an internal hemorrhage in the base of the skull, as well as a luxación between the first and second cervical one that its nervous system damaged irreparably.

The teammate of Daijiro, the Spanish Sete Gibernau, will not use moto of Kato, technically superior to the one of the Catalan, by respect to his memory, of equal way that no pilot will replace Japanese the next week in the Great Prize of South Africa.

The causes of the accident have still not been clarified, but, according to it affirmed mánager of his equipment, the Faustus Gresini, "are excluded the hypotheses that attribute the accident to a mechanical failure".

The security of the layout of Suzuka has been numerous questioned times although the people in charge of the circuit affirmed that "the accident could happen in any circuit of the world". Gibernau, on the other hand, affirmed that it will not return to run in Suzuka.
Daijiro Kato, a world-wide champion who aspired to everything Daijiro Kato surprised with one ' wildcard' in Suzuka in 1996, when it finished third behind Biaggi and Numata. It won in the same circuit in 1997 and 1998 the Championship of Japan before jumping to the World-wide one piloting a Sling in the 2000.

One adapted quickly to the circuits of the World-wide one and took the advantage in the category of 250cc, losing the title in the last race. The following year gained the title of 250cc of apabullante way. It gained all the races, beating the record of victories in one season (eleven) and of points in his category.

In the 2002 it happened to pilot a NSR 500, obtaining a second position in the World-wide one, having even changed to the RC211V to half of season. Considered as the Japanese with more possibilities of obtaining title 2003 on the V5, its race has stayed truncated of tragic and definitive way when it looked for a new victory that to dedicate to its liking.

A bit better English from Eurosport.com:

Quote:
Kato loses final battle

The world of motorcycling racing was in mourning on Saturday afternoon when 26-year-old Honda rider Daijiro Kato finally lost his battle to survive the horrific injuries he suffered during a crash two weeks ago in the Japanese GP.

Eurosport would like to express their most heartfelt commiserations to the Kato family.

MotoGP's circuit doctor, Dr Costa, expressed his grief with a brief note on the Clinica Mobile website:
"Very sad news have just arrived from Japan. If our young Japanese decided to listen to the voice of angels and enter the valley of light, choosing to abandon this world, he chose to do it in the most emblematic night for man, the night of Easter and of Resurrection.

"There aren't enough tears to express our sadness, and no adequate words except the words of poetry."

Daijiro, 2001 250cc World Champion is survived by his wife and two young children.
Two young kids too, scheisse

This is sad. I'm in a state of shock right now, I can't concentrate on the Juve game

I just read here that he just had a daughter in this month itself, and he just turned 26 this month also.

Yeah, especially now Sportcenter is showing a special tribute on Kato I finally got over the shock, but the sadness is still there.

May God bless his family.

Thanks for posting those T

I see lots of Spaniards in the top three (and that plus Rossi and Capirossi too ) So definitely not bad.
