Yep. This is why there are a lot of MLB fans who thoroughly dislike the Yankees. They basically corner the market in their favor. All.The.Time. It must be nice. This is just extra incentive for me to want to see them lose.

Couldn't the Expos have gotten a little more in return?!!! Nick Johnson is not ALL that, IMO. I think Omar Minaya could have twisted NY's arm a little harder. Maybe now Steinbrenner will show *some* restraint and not go after Bartolo Colon. We shall see.

Hey, let's not be greedy now! You guys just signed Flash Gordon as a setup man, and still have Rivera in the bullpen. But, who knows? Maybe the Yanks will swing a trade for Gagne, too.

I'm glad to see Hawkins come home. The rumor mill is also churning out a proposed homecoming for Greg Maddux. I highly doubt that's going to happen. But I would be thrilled if it did.

Damn.

I like Manny, i think we gotta make a huge push to put Vlad on the other side of Johnny in the outfield. If nothing more than the knowledge of Vazquez.

Kathie, if the Yankmes got Gagne, i'd blow up yankee stadium

Heh! :lol

OMG.. You guys, come on! Roger Clemens retired, we need young people and we get one and we're "bad"

Boston has Pedro aka "GOD" and now Curt Schilling... And that's not a superstar rotation? That's not a little unfair.

Well, you wake up a sleeping giant you're going to hear him roar all the way to Alaska!

Its just wood for the fire, next year will be awesome! Come on, admit it, its fun!

On the other hand NICK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NICKY! God, I miss him already!!!

Kathie I wanted Hawking before I knew about Vazquez Believe me, it's a great addition to your Cubs!

A-Rod to Boston?

Wow! I'd be surprised if that deal went down. I know the BoSox would like to rid themselves of Manny Ramirez, but I'm not sure taking on an even bigger (ludicrous) contract is the right move. Plus, this deal would likely necessitate a trade of Nomar. He's not on the same level as A-Rod, but he's still a good SS. Boston's problem is not their offense. So, I don't see the reason to change things. Just continue to improve the pitching staff. That's all they need to do.

We be bitter. It's not like the Yanks are *just* getting one young stud, they are scouring the free agent and trade market for the top dogs. And Steinbrenner is spending Monopoly $, too. Who's next? Guerrero, Colon, A-Rod? Seriously, nothing would surprise me. This trend makes it very hard for a lot of owners to compete. For fans of other MLB teams, it kind of gets tiresome watching the rich only get richer. Know what I mean? I'll say, though, if I was a Yanks fan, I'd be VERY happy. You have every right to be. Your owner is very commmitted to winning. Basically, at any price. It must be nice.

ya know, tha Yankmes can do whatever they want, they still won't win a championship, cuz they look at what they've done, and no rings. Playoffs sure, but they are no better than the Braves.

Pedro and Schilling, Pedro is fragile and hasn't been himself the past few years, it's catching up with him. and Shcilling is like 97 years old, on his last legs.

I'd love to see ARod in Boston, but the cost is basically removing the Red Sox identity. Manny? And like Kath said, it'd pretty much mean doing something with Nomah. If we trade him to Oakland For Hudson, i'd be ok with it, as we'd get a solid young pitcher. Maybe the Dodgah's would like a Nomah for Goggles swap?

Kat, not at all. I cringe whenever the Boss makes a huge trade or signs the top FA because when we DO win, it's not as fun because people say "you bought it." NO WE DIDN'T! What about the years we don't win, when we do win its because we play better.

So... It's not all nice and cool. But yeah, I feel "protected" knowing the Boss is there, I can't deny that.

Chris heh! I get what you mean about Alex in Boston. But if things in Fenway are gonna be shook up no matter what then ARod is worth it!

I'm not a fan of the contract, but ARod represents The U and is therefore worth it. IF you have a market like Boston.

There's a bit of a difference between winning your division every year for more than a decade and only managing to win one WS and making the playoffs 8 in a row, winning 4 WS, and making it to two others. I'm fairly sure both the Braves and the Yankees would agree with me.

First time posting here, but it looks like the Yankees payroll will mow past the $200 million mark. They got Vazquez and they might resign Pettite. Plus, if the Red Sox get Rodriguez, then, there is no telling what Steinburner will do. He will certainly try to counter that move by getting another position player. Well, the rich get richer.

I live in Toronto, and our starting pitching accounts for about $11 million. I look at the Yankees, and their starting pitching accounts for $42.5 million. And thats only for four starters. If they resign Pettite, it could be $52.5 million. Their bullpen is even worth $40 million.

I have to admit though, that I think the Yankees got a great young arm in Javier Vazquez. They had to give up a young position player in Nick Johnson and his great on-base percentage, but it was probably worth it because pitchers like Vazquez are hard to get and are ace material. And pitching gets teams to the playoffs and closer to the World Series.

I understand the Red Sox getting A-Rod; though they eat a sackload of salary in his increased rate/covering part of Manny's deal, they can make a huge chunk back fairly easily. With his clean cut profile and public appeal, A-Rod can bring in a lot more revenue through merch sales, public relations with controlling interests/advertisers/sponsors, and attract wider media attention.

If A-Rod is willing to restructure his contract (at least a really long deferral of dollars owed, if not a flat out reduction in overall salary), the deal works. Getting him allows the Red Sox to try Nomar out at 2B for an electric infield.

Including the addition of Schilling, an A-Rod acquisition would cost them roughly +$20m. If they add Foulke or another high powered reliever, even higher. Lowe and Varitek are in line for pay bumps after 2004, though I don't see Pedro being able to command another %17.5m or greater again. The Red Sox will have to spend even more exorbitantly than current levels to compete with The NY Empire...

The question is, do the Red Sox really need A-Rod? I don't think so. It's kind of hard to justify taking on that kind of contract when offense is not a shortcoming of this team. Boston is just fine with Garciaparra at SS. Sure, it would be nice to bring aboard a player who is arguably the best of his generation, but not at that asking price. Texas was dumb to shell out that kind of dough to begin with. They should have invested in their Achilles heel-- pitching.

The Cubs re-signed Mark Grudzielanek to a one-year contract today. Me likes. I thought he did a great job of getting on base and playing solid defense at 2B.

Btw, welcome to the thread dayne!
