Fffff'in', LaTroy Hawkins!!!!

How many freakin' games will he be able to blow in the ninth inning before Dusty comes to the realization that he sucks? LaToya has only converted 3 saves out of 12 opportunities when put in that position, so the numbers obviously don't point toward success. And after last week's 9th inning meltdown against NY (with the Cubs up 3-0, with 2 outs and an 0-2 count -- just like yesterday), you would think Dusty wouldn't put him in the position to deliver another huge blow to the Cubs' diminishing playoff hopes. What a joke! I know the Cubs don't have a bonafide closer, but Hawkins has proven that he's not the guy. Give someone else the opportunity to get the job done. They can't be any worse.

Damn those Astros! That's all I have to say about them. It would have been nice if St. Louis had put up a better fight in this series. The bad thing is that Houston has a cakewalk schedule to end the season, with Colorado up next. However, on a positive note, they have played one more game than the Cubs and all 3 WC-contending teams have the same number of losses. Thank god SF lost last night! No offense, Neon. It was the only solace I could take away from yesterday.

So, basically, the NL wild card is going to come down to this weekend. If the Cubs blow another game, especially today's finale with Cincy, they are done. You can stick a fork in them.

The Astros are hot at exactly the right time, sweeping St Louis is huge...I don't think they've been swept all year? Did they play second stringers the whole series?

I thinking more and more that Astros might take it.

Last night's loss was horrific, not just the ramifications of losing so miserably at such a bad time (two errors in the tenth and one gigantic mental lapse) but Dustan Mohr, one of our rightfielders, hurt himself pretty badly to end the game. It was just...poop. This guy I know wore a sign around his neck going into work that said, "Do not talk to me about last night's Giants game." I laughed but only to keep from crying. Being a fan of one of *those* teams (Cubs, Red Sox, Indians...etc) is just NO fun sometimes.

ETA: I can't believe the Hawkins thing worked out so badly for the Cubs, this guy was nearly untouchable when he pitched for the Twins. (I think it was the Twins...?) And then there's his bad attitude to boot.

Chi - I feel your pain.

*hangs head in shame* We SUCK, and Ken Macha's not helping by leaving pitchers in too long, when they've obviously got nothing and are going to be giving up runs, and by not making the right choice (twice) for closers! GRR!

And while I like the BoSox, I'm bummed that it means no wild card possibility for the As - we'd better get it together...

Prior has struck out 13 through six innings so far.

What have the Cubs done to support him? Scored zero runs and left eleven runners on base. Argh! Come on! Let's not waste a great pitching performance like this.

Let's get those bats going!

As you can tell, I'm listening to this game instead of actually working.

*Sits on edge of chair*

ETA: Damn, Austin Kearns! He just tied the game 1-1, after Sosa hit a monster HR.

I'm pulling for your Cubbies. As u might recall my cousin Paul plays for them. How's he doing btw? Maintaining a batting avg below his weight I'm sure. Haven't been paying close attention lately.

The Cubs lost again. I'm starting to think they don't want to get into the playoffs.

Houston also swept them the second week of the season. Yep, they've been playing Cedeno, Taguchi, Anderson, and Luna quite a lot lately.

The NL WC race should be pretty interesting this weekend. It'll be so much fun to watch.

It's looking like LA vs. STL in round 1 for now.

That's it.

The Cubs are done.

I can't believe they wasted a 16-K performance by Mark Prior. Where the hell was the offense? Not only did their bats go cold, but I thought Dusty made some really stupid decisions that put the Cubs in the position to lose. And this is not the first time, either. The new slogan for this season should be "In Dusty We Busty."

Man, this blows! It will take a miracle for the Cubs to make it. I'm a realist -- it's not going to happen. The pathetic thing is that they controlled their own fate just last week and let their season go down the drain to the likes of the Mets and Reds. Two of the worst teams in MLB. What a chokejob!

This letdown might even be worse than the Game 6 NLCS debacle.

*Sigh*

Well, my support is going to Boston and San Francisco now.

Congrats on the win, shrr! It's going to be a showdown between Anaheim and Oakland for the AL West crown. Our teams have a lot in common, so I can understand your frustration. I just hope the season doesn't end on the same note for your boys.

Bako calls a good game, but isn't able to produce very much offensively. It says a lot that he's the personal catcher of Maddux and now Prior. I just wish he was more of a threat with the bat. Still, I think he's a great back-up and the positives definitely outweigh the negatives.

I saw that and my jaw just dropped. I was in shock over it. It was so sudden, he got the ball and then he just fell.

For all you Yankee haters, ignore this.

Chi: I'm sorry about the Cubs. Haven't seen them play in a long time, though. They still have a chance, right? I can't believe there are like three teams after that Wild Card spot. The Cubs deserve it.

Oakland A's fans: Nice walk off homer by Crosby, eh?

Damn...the Cards almost came back against the Brewers last night. I'm almost worried about the way they've been playing lately. But, they haven't had their entire regular lineup in the game in over a week. Morris sucked it up last night. But, good news is he's been doing this good game, bad game, good game thing all year. This means he should have a great game in game 1 of the NLDS next week.

The Cubs. Well, I'd say they deserve it, but they had their fate in their own hands. All they had to do is win and they blew it. Hard to feel sorry for a team that just can't get it together the last week of the season.

So it'll be SF or LA against STL in round 1. I think I'd rather Houston win the WC and take on LA in round 1. Even though I loathe Houston and I work with a bunch of cocky Astros fans that think they've all that.
