Greatest Athletes of Your Generation
Let’s pretend that it is many years in the future and you are sitting there with your grandkids telling them about sports “back in the day.” Who would you include among the greatest athletes or teams of your generation? Which athletes have stood out during your lifetime that you could see yourself talking about many years down the road? Your reasons can be both good or bad. I’ll be interested in reading your comments.
Here’s a few that come to mind: Michael Jordan Larry Bird Magic Johnson Shaquille O’Neal – mainly due to his size. Kobe Bryant – ugh! I hate to admit it. Hakeem Olajuwon Lebron James Roger Clemens Greg Maddux Barry Bonds Cal Ripken, Jr. Dwight Gooden Wayne Gretzky Mario Lemieux Dominik Hasek Joe Montana Walter Payton Jerry Rice John Elway Dan Marino Barry Sanders Bo Jackson (pre-hip injury) – Bo Knows! Tiger Woods ’92 Dream Team ’95-’96 Chicago Bulls ’85-’86 Chicago Bears __________________

Magic, Mike, Larry
Blurry space between the two groups of studs. LeBron, D-Wade, Melo Pedro, Manny, Vlad, Rocket, Maddux, Hershieser, Bonds, Straw and Doc. FAvorites and Nemesis Sweetness, Rice, Barry, Marino, Montana, Ray Lewis, Lott - all time greats Wayne, Dominator - Wayne is the greatest, Dominik took buffalo to the finals, one MVPs and single handedly won a gold for the Chechs. Maria and Anna. - Beauty and talent, Anna started it and Maria pulls the winning card in with the looks. __________________

Too many; but since I love snowboarding, I'll say Shaun White and Danny Kass.

Baseball: Rivera, Jeter, Griffey Jr., Clemens, and Pedro. Rivera and Jeter personify Yankee greatness to me. No one was a better all around player in his generation than Griffey when he was in his prime. I hate Clemens, but he is/was what he is/was. Pedro's up there with my ultimate sports villains; I hate his ass, but deep down, I'm going to miss him when he retires. Few regular season things give me the same pleasure as when he fails to beat the Yankees.
Tennis: Agassi, Hingis, the Williams sisters, and Graf. Basketball: Jordan, Magic, Lebron, and Manute Bol. The first three are obvious, but I have so much respect for Bol off the court, that I have to mention him. What he's given and what he continues to try to do is so much more than just being great on the field of play... it's being great in life. Football: Favre, Sanders, TO (one of sports' greatest ***holes), and Elway. |

Nice topic, Kathie!
I love the very first name you mentioned. Actually, I agree with alot of names dropped here. __________________

And I see Martina Hingis is back in the swing of things. Hopefully she'll have another successful run. I don't follow the other sports, but you know Bo Jackson is an obvious choice for me. __________________

Cycling:
Lance Armstrong Track & Field: Carl Lewis Jackie Joyner-Kersee Florence Griffith-Joyner "Flo Jo" Swimming: Mark Spitz Gymnastics: Mary Lou Retton Non-human: Secretariat. (Yes, I'm showing my age) Because he was a superb athlete in his own right and a legend. (Triple Crown winner, for those of you who aren't aware) He didn't just win his races; he dominated. His 1973 Belmont Stakes race was hailed as one of the most dramatic events in sports history. His 31 length margin of victory was nothing short of phenomenal. And if you think I'm crazy, I want to point out that I'm not alone in my thinking. This is from his bio: "Secretariat was voted No. 35 among top North American athletes of the 20th century by Sports Century, the only non-human among them." People that were already mentioned whom I agree with: Bo Jackson. There are some people in this world who are truly born to be athletes, and Bo Jackson is one of them. Damn shame his career ended so early. Darryl Strawberry. Say what you want about his personal troubles, but what an amazing athlete. In his prime, when this guy came to bat with the bases loaded or in a clutch situation, everyone I know - even non Mets fans - dropped what they were doing just to watch. Orel Hershiser. His scoreless-streak in the 80's was incredible. What a pitcher. Last edited by ChiltonYale; 06-03-2006 at 10:40 PM |

Along with many of the players already mentioned, I would also mention:
Randy Johnson John Stockton - The guy holds quite a few unreachable records in the assists catagory, I would choose him over any other point guard to play in the NBA because of everything he brings to a team. Karl Malone - The best power foward to ever play the game. Charles Barkley - The guy was amazing, especially at only about 6'4" to 6'6" tall playing the power foward position __________________

I don't pay much attention to many sports especially details and players but Michael Jordan comes to my mind.

Great idea for a thread! Off the top of my head I can think of these people:
Tennis Martina Navratilova Serena Williams Roger Federer Steffi Graf (all amazing athletes) John McEnroe (I was captivated by him and his talents but I didn't like his bad behaviour). Alpine skiing Marcel Hirscher Mikaela Shiffrin (they have won many races) I might think of some more later. __________________
