Los Angeles Lakers #17: Because we have big guns.

The Los Angeles Lakers

From the George Mikan-led Minneapolis Lakers teams of the '40s and '50s to the "Showtime" era Magic Johnson teams of the late 1980s to
Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant's dynasty of the early 21st century, one thing has been consistent about the Lakers: winning. The franchise
has boasted a host of Hall of Famers and has compiled a string of championships which has scarcely been rivaled in the history of American sports.

1) What is your favourite laker playoff moment and why?

Damn. Just one? Well, if I had to pick one, it would probably be the 0.4 shot by Derek Fisher against the Spurs in Game 5 in the 2003-2004 playoffs. I remember everything about that particular playoff game. I even remember what I was wearing, where I was and how ecstatic I became when the shot went through. It was better than Horry's three pointers and Kobe's insane performance against the Pistons and Suns because it was improbable. The Lakers were not meant to win that game but they showed heart and their will to win at all costs got them that W.

Let me set the scene. Tim Duncan just came through for the Spurs and hit a fadeway jumpshot over Shaquille O'Neal. When it finally went through the net, there was only 0.4 seconds left. And the Laker fan in me believed that was enough time to get a good shot up. The only questions were who was going to take it and how were they going to shoot it. All through that timeout, I was praying and walking around. Couldn't sit still at all. So, game time. Payton will imbound the ball. Kobe was probably going to get it. They had him covered well. Ball went to Fish, who threw up a prayer. AND BANG! It went in. They went crazy. I went crazy. Seriously. Best part about it was how shocked everyone looked. Not only the players on TV, but my friends who were rooting for the Spurs and thought that they had the game.

There are so many great moments to chose from! The Lakers have such a great legacy and to chose only 1 moment it crazy. But if I had to choose 1 moment I would have to say Derek Fisher's 0.3 shot against San Antonio. This was a tough decision because I had it came down this one and Robert Horry's 3 vs. Sacramento. I think this is my favorite playoff moment because it is the one I replay in my head so often. I remember when this shot when it my jaw dropped and I screamed my head off. Turned out I lost my voice due to that shot! Knowing that the Lakers are down and there's only 0.3 seconds on the clock, everyone gave up hope. I must admit that I gave up hope as well, I thought, "Well there goes our season." But next thing you know Derek Fisher is hitting a shot that will last forever in our hearts. Since then I've never gave up hope on the Lakers. It really was a defining moment for me and the Lakers.
sheila.

As hard as it is to choose a favourite moment, there is always one that is going to be extra special. The moment I knew I fell in love with this team and franchise was back in 2000. It was game seven of the Western Conference Finals against the Portland Trailblazers. The Lakers were down by fifteen coming into the fourth quarter, and managed to win the game. It is just one of those moments that is going to be engraved in my memory forever. The sight of the crowd going crazy, the purple and gold colours coming together as one. Shaq pointing to the crowd. Just everything about that game, that moment, was perfect. And that is what epitomizes the Lakers for me.

I tried not to choose this moment, since it was already picked twice. But how can I not? That 0.4 Fisher shot, is simply the most unbelievable thing ever. I had lost hope as well at the time... and when Fisher made that impossible shot, I don't think I ever screamed that hard in my entire life. If I ever wanna introduce people to the brilliance that is the Lakers, I always show that scene first. I think it shows the magical spirit that only the Lakers have. That unique will to win and just play the game in the most inspiring way, you can only see it in them.
rafa.

It has to be the game against San Antonio of the Western Conference Finals forever known as 0.4. My brother and I were sitting in the living room watching the game. Actually I was like pacing around the room because I couldn’t sit still haha and the Lakers were down but were making a comeback and my Laker hating cousin comes over and starts talking trash about the Lakers. My brother and I were rolling our eyes like OMG can you please just shut up! So the Lakers start losing around the time my cousin gets there and we make it a point to point it out and he’s like so what you want me to go. My brother and I shared a look and then said yes lol and he left, well not so easily, we did push him out and what do you know another Laker run! We were in the lead and Duncan makes a lucky shot and my bro and I are like no!!! My cousin calls but we ignore him because we don’t want to hear it and then Fish! Bless his heart makes the miraculous shot! We were ecstatic, jumping up and down and my brother is like let’s call him and I greedily said yes! But of course he didn’t answer us. It’s ingrained in my memory forever!

What has been your favourite part(s) of this season?

Andrew Bynum's break out season. Trevor Ariza's dunk on Grant Hill on Christmas Day. The Pau Gasol Trade. Pacific Division title. #1 seed on the Western Conference race. Kobe Bryant winning MVP. Take your pick.
cristina.

This 2007-2008 season has been nothing but amazing! I think my favorite part of the season is right now. Everything the Lakers have worked for this season leads up to this..the playoffs. This is where you separate the men from the boys. This is where the Lakers will really have to prove they are the team to beat..and I enjoy it a lot. This is what us Laker fans have been waiting for. 5 years we've waited and now it's here. The growth of our bench, Andrew Bynun, and the acquisition of Pau Gasol was made for this time. It was great to watch our bench make a name for themselves, and see Andrew become something more than a waste of height, and to see Kobe become the leader we all knew he was. This season has been magical, but it's not over until we bring home the trophy to LA, where it should be!
sheila.

No one in Lakerland would've been able to believe where we are right now. Number one seed in the West, with the possibility of a championship in the future. And that is what I love most about this season, the pleasant surprise of the whole season coming together and being able to watch this group of players perform game in and game out - and do it in a way that has been sincerely missed by the league as a whole. They not only work hard, but entertain. The smiles on all the players' faces just shows how much they enjoy what they do. And it's an absolute privilege to watch them all.
trisha.

I have to say it was seeing Kobe win the MVP. I actually can't believe he didn't won sooner. And like he said, in such a humble way... he wouldn't have done it without the rest of the team. And that's what I'm loving most this season. It's a pleasure to see them play in such a beautiful and fun way. They love playing with each other, they're friends, and I think that that's what's making the difference. Of course.. that and extremely hard work and talent! The Lakers are the best team out there, and you can't deny it.
rafa.

Everything about it. We exceeded expectations. I remember watching the season opener and saying we’ve got a great season ahead of us but then injuries came along and it was like disillusioning but then we got the amazing Pau trade and our season continued better than I ever expected it to.

Awesome! I'll probably get it this weekend. I'm gonna try and read all 3 and I still have to do summer reading for English. I need to decide between Sea biscuit, A Farewell to Arms, or Red Badge of Courage. I have no idea which one.

Lakers' Kupchak has 'Mob' mentality
By Elliott Teaford, Staff Writer
Article Last Updated: 07/01/2008 12:12:16 AM PDT

Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak planned to scratch off two high priority items from his summer to-do list Monday night. He said he would telephone the agents for guard Sasha Vujacic and forward Ronny Turiaf to talk about new contracts.

The free agent negotiating period began at 9 p.m., and Kupchak did not wish to waste a minute before contacting the representatives for the two restricted free agents, who were key members of the Lakers' so-called "Bench Mob" last season.

Kupchak made it clear he wants Vujacic and Turiaf back next season, preferring to retain their services rather than sign unrestricted free agents to replace them. He extended qualifying offers to each player Friday, jump-starting the process.

As restricted free agents, Vujacic and Turiaf are free to negotiate with other teams, but the Lakers can match any offers they receive from other clubs.

Unrestricted free agents are able to sign with any team, including their previous employers.

Kupchak's hands are tied by salary- cap limitations, which means he can't pursue high-priced unrestricted free agents without breaking the bank.

"There's a couple of guys who may become free agents who are top-tier free agents," Kupchak said. "But they're going to be (asking for) $10million or above, and we could never sign them. We don't have the (salary cap) room.

"So you're looking at guys who have had marginal success in the league. ... Quite frankly, we'd rather have Ronny and Sasha than those types of players."

Vujacic said he wished to be with the Lakers "for life." Turiaf said, "I'm hoping to be here. You can write that in big capital letters: Ronny Turiaf would like to be a Laker."

Kupchak said he would be content to make Vujacic and Turiaf his key offseason signings, believing the Lakers' roster would be strong enough to contend for the NBA championship for a second consecutive season.

"I think we feel that if we can bring those two players back and we get Trevor (Ariza) and Andrew (Bynum) back (from injuries), we'd be happy going into training camp with that group," Kupchak said.

"If we run into a roadblock and we struggle to sign a player or there's a prolonged period before they can make a decision, then we'll have to look in other directions.

"But right now, based on the free agent market that's out there and our existing free agents, we think it's in our best interest to sign back our free agents. It's not a great group of players to choose from when you compare them against Sasha or Ronny."

In addition, the Lakers can offer contract extensions to Bynum and Lamar Odom, each of whom will be in the final years of their deals in 2008-09.

Kupchak also said he hoped to sign Sun Yue, a 6-foot-9 guard from China who was a second-round pick in 2007, and Joe Crawford, a 6-5 guard from Kentucky who was a second-round pick last Thursday.

Sun will play with China in the Beijing Olympics starting Aug. 8. Crawford is expected to join the Lakers to play in the Las Vegas summer league starting July 11.
