London Named Home for 2012 Olympic Games.

SINGAPORE -- Britain vs. France. Blair vs. Chirac. Two historic rival cities convinced they were long overdue.

London prevailed, upsetting Paris to secure the 2012 Olympics.

The British capital overcame its cross-Channel opponent 54-50 Wednesday on the fourth ballot of the International Olympic Committee vote, capping the most glamorous and hotly contested bid race in Olympic history.

Moscow, New York and Madrid were eliminated in the first three rounds.

Paris had been the front-runner throughout the campaign, but London picked up momentum in the late stages with strong support from Prime Minister Tony Blair.

"Many people do reckon that London is the greatest city in the whole world at the moment," an exultant Blair said after hearing the result in Gleneagles, Scotland, where he is hosting the G-8 summit.

Good for London. I have to admit, I was expecting it to be Paris.

That's good for London, but they were devasated today with the terrorist attacks in the subway and bus system. Prayers go out.

Horrible news today about London.

But, thanks for posting this yesterday, Bianca. And, girl, I was with you at not wanting the Games in NY! That would have been a nightmare, indeed.

I'm glad the games will be in London it is one my favorite cities. I'm still in shock about today but I'm sure proud of the British people and how they are handling everything.

As for 2012 I'm sure they will throw a great bash Not to mention it will bring several much needed jobs to the East end of London

I am happy for London. I really thought it would be Paris but I think they'll give it another go in a couple years for the 2016 games. It was a tight race. I don't think NYC is ready to host an olympics so i think it's best they were not chosen.

Congrats for London But it stinks about the terrorist attacks...it was kind of odd timing, but I don't think the attacks were a result of London being named the home for the 2012 games

I doubt there was any connection there as well... something as coordinated and hidden as the attack was would have taken a moderately long time to plan, longer than this Olympic thing would have given at least.

My heart goes out to everyone who lost a loved one or were hurt themselves in what happened.

Yeah, they had probably been doing dry runs and planning these attacks for months if not years.

Baseball and softball dropped from the 2012 games..

While I understand (in theory, at least) why baseball was dropped, cutting softball makes absolutely no sense to me.

Hmm.

I'm not a fan at all, but that doesn't make too much sense to me, either.
