How To Adopt A Team?

What do yo do if you have no favourite team in a certain sport? Who do you cheer for? Who do you root against?

I live up north in Canada and support all the professional teams from Toronto, the Blue Jays, Raptors, and Maple Leafs. I grew up with the Toronto sports scene so it was kinda hard not becoming a fan of the teams.

But I have a little problem when it comes to the NFL. There's no NFL team in Toronto, so I don't have a team to root for. We get plenty of Bills coverage up here since we live in their "region," but I hate the Bills! For some reason there's alot of animosity when it comes to Toronto fans and Buffalo fans. We just don't like each other. So I can't root for Buffalo, it would be against my nature. Although, there's been plenty of talk about Buffalo moving to Toronto after the Bills' owner croaks. Maybe then I'll root for the Bills. But for now, I'm a man without an NFL team.

The one solution to my problem is to adopt a team. But how would I go about doing that? Do I take a team that's on top? I remember when I was younger I loved watching the 49ers with Joe Montana and Jerry Rice. The 49ers were just so dominant back then. But I jumped off the 49ers bandwagon a long time ago after Steve Young left.

So whose bandwagon should I jump on now? My loyalties aren't really strong when it comes to the NFL. I'll only love a team if they win me money. But I need a team that I can love unconditionally.

Any suggestions on finding a team?

Ehhh, Patriots. That's one of the teams I love rooting against. I'll be putting some money on Kansas City to beat the 14.5 spread this week. Go Chiefs go! But watch New England blow them outta the water and take my money. I find it's never a good thing to bet on a team you either hate or love. Your judgement is always clouded.

Here's some of the teams I'm thinking about adopting:

Detroit Lions: I'm starting to develop a man crush on Megatron.
New Orleans: I like the trio of Brees, Colston and Bush.
Cleveland: Dressing up as a dog and barking during the game looks like fun.

I thought it was 16? Either way I agree that's way to high for a week one game.

I like Cleveland. A friend of mine's family is all Browns fans. So when we watched them have some success last year it was kinda fun. The richocet FG game was classic!

You could always jump back on.

Yeah, I've seen the line anywhere from 15 to 17. It opened up at 14.5 and has gone up since. The over/under for the game is 44. I'm liking the over on that considering Belichick loves running up the score. Although, most Week 1 games are usually low scoring.

NikNak: Call me when they get a real QB. I don't have much faith in J.T. O'Sullivan. But Mike Martz did turn Kurt Warner from a bag boy at a grocery store into a Super Bowl champion. Could lightning strike twice? I have my doubts.

I know I won alot on them. You give that many points on a super bowl, had NOT to take those points. Even better when the team getting the points straight out wins!

Oh, I see...

Well, you won't be getting a call anytime soon.

Heh.

What? Don't the Toronto Argonauts do anything for you?

*Shakes head at topic*

As you know, I am SO not a fan of being a bandwagon fan. I say pick your team and remain loyal to them. However, I can respect those who do not.

Based on your list, I would say that New Orleans or Cleveland are your best options. Do NOT become a fan of the Lions. They are like the NFL's version of the Chicago Cubs - "lovable losers." However, there is not much that is lovable about them. Seriously, following the Lions is asking for heartbreak. That was even the case when they had one of the best RBs in NFL history in Barry Sanders.

I would also suggest you consider San Diego. They have LT, a strong defense, and some young and exciting players on their team.

You know, Toronto had the 2nd best running back in "Professional Football" there for awhile, only behind Barry Sanders, in Michael "The Pinball" Clemons. Picture Barry Sanders who also returned kicks. The guy was out of this world.

As far as actually picking a team to root for, it's hard to say why some of us like the teams we do. I was a weather freak as a kid, i'd sit there and watch the Weather Channel for hours. One day, I was flipping through the channels and heard "blah blah blah and the Miami Hurricanes" and I was like, what? I kept the channel on and was pretty tickled to learn there was a football team named after a natural disaster. I needant tell you that I ended up becoming a pretty big fan of these Hurricanes and whichever team they end up playing for as a professional.

I'd say no to Cleveland as well, but maybe that's partially because I've been a Steelers fan my whole life.
