Tonalist wins Belmont Stakes

NEW YORK -- California Chrome has failed in his bid to win the first Triple Crown in 36 years.

Official results of the race are pending, but California Chrome finished well behind the lead. Tonalist crossed first.

The result means the longest drought without a Triple Crown champion in history is extended.

California Chrome and jockey Victor Espinoza lost the 1½-mile race on a hot day at Belmont Park, where tens of thousands of fans were packed in hoping to see history. It was not to be, leaving Affirmed as the most recent Triple Crown winner in 1978.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

Even through he didn't win, California Chrome have 2 races in the Triple Crown races. That is still good.

Is everyone excited about the Belmont Stakes tomorrow? I'm somewhat. I'll watch it to see how close American Pharoah comes to winning. 1 thing that's fascinating to me about Horse Racing is the names of horses. Was watching NBCSN today & 1 of the things I've noticed about Horse Racing is that people will name their horses just about anything. There was 1 named today ''Rare Eagle''. Which I thought was funny, because it's not a rare eagle at all. It's probably not even a rare horse. The odds of a pet being named ''Rare'' at all is not likely, but in Horse Racing for names it seems anything goes.

Have fun watching the Belmont Stakes tomorrow everyone!

I saw it. Unsure whether I should be more impressed with American Pharoah winning yesterday or unimpressed with how it's competition did. Was hoping for a more competitive race. Oh well. This of course is not the end for Horse Racing this year though the Triple Crown races are over. On Saturdays they air on CSNNW here races from Emerald Downs. That's up in the Seattle area. So I'll try to watch more races this year. All all of you happy that American Pharoah won?

What was up with that Kentucky Derby result yesterday? And why do so many horses run in that race? It's amazing that something like that hasn't happened before. Plus they were in terrible weather. What do you think?

Here's that story: Kentucky Derby DQ costs bettors around $9M

It will go down in betting lore as the $9 million disqualification.

Kentucky Derby favorite Maximum Security crossed the finish line first but was subsequently disqualified Saturday, making long shot Country House the winner. It cost bettors who backed Maximum Security to win, place or show approximately $9 million, according to betting statistics provided by online horse racing site TwinSpires.com.

Maximum Security closed at 9-2 and appeared to hold off the field on a rain-soaked, sloppy track at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. An objection was filed accusing Maximum Security of interfering with other horses, and race officials reversed the decision, giving Country House the victory.

Country House, at 65-1, had the second-longest odds of any Kentucky Derby winner.

Across the nation, there was more than $6.2 million bet on Maximum Security to win and only $520,907 on Country House. The largest win bet reported by TwinSpires on Maximum Security was $8,000, which would have paid a net $36,000. The largest win bet on Country House, per TwinSpires, was $2,500. It paid a net $162,500.

Maximum Security also had $1,495,408 bet to place and $1,272,082 to show.

At the SuperBook at Westgate Las Vegas, the reversal caused a mid-five-figure swing against the house in its Kentucky Derby futures odds market, which is separate from the national pari-mutuel pool.

"[We] went from a good-sized win to a good-sized loss," SuperBook sportsbook director John Murray told ESPN in a text message. "The SuperBook animal racing trade team is annoyed by the decision."

Only 1 percent of bets and 1 percent of the total amount wagered on the Kentucky Derby futures market at William Hill sportsbooks in Nevada were on Country House. Country House's odds were as long as 80-1 in February at William Hill.
