Interesting News: YouTube in Web video deal with National Hockey League

Quote:
NEW YORK, Nov 15 (Reuters) - Popular online video company YouTube Inc. on Wednesday said it would show short clips of National Hockey League games in its first agreement with a professional sports league.

YouTube, whose $1.65 billion purchase by Internet search leader Google Inc. (GOOG.O: Quote, Profile, Research) closed on Tuesday, said its users would now be able to watch daily short-form video from the NHL for the 2006-2007 season starting this month.

It sucks that some clips will be deleted but then again it seems like everyone is doing it. I hope they still add the games to Google Video too because the quality is so much better then YouTube.

I hope that more clips are moved to Google afterwards, but who knows.

This past Monday, the Hockey Hall of Fame inducted 6 new members into its group of honoured members. They are:

Patrick Roy
Roy won four Stanley Cup championships and three Vezina Trophies as the NHL's top goalie in 19 seasons with the Canadiens and Avalanche. He retired in 2003 as the league's career leader with 551 regular-season victories.

Terrance "Dick" Duff
Duff played with Toronto, Montreal, L.A., Buffalo and the Rangers during an 18-year career. He won a total of six Stanley Cups with the Leafs and the Habs and finished his career with 283 goals and 572 points in 1,030 games.

Herb Brooks
Brooks led the U.S. to one of the greatest upsets in sports history, the "Miracle on Ice" victory over the Soviets in the 1980 semis. The Americans went on to win gold. Brooks died in a car accident in 2003.

Harley Hotchkiss
Hotchkiss was part of the group that moved the NHL's Flames to Calgary from Atlanta. He's still a part owner of the team, and is the chairman of the NHL's Board of Governors.

Peter Maher
Maher has been the radio voice of the Flames since the franchise moved to Calgary from Atlanta in 1980.

Scott Morrison
Morrison was a columnist and sports editor at the Toronto Sun before becoming managing editor of hockey for Rogers Sportsnet in 2001.

Here's a video featuring comments from Patrick Roy and the son of Herb Brooks. HHOF 2006

I was watching the Stars Insider show last night on FSN. There is a hockey rink that the Stars use to practice on and it's named after Ken Hitchcock. I never understood why the Stars turned their backs on Hitchcock. He led them to the Stanley Cup Finals two years in a row. Most Stars fans probably don't care that much about the regular season because the team has choked lately in the first round. The Stars have Marty Turco but he has the Peyton Manning syndrome. He is great during the regular season but chokes in the playoffs.

This is totally trivial but has the Stanley Cup always looked the way it does now? Are the layers of metal added to the cup when it runs of space to put the players name on it? I've always wondered how do they put all the teams and players on the Stanley Cup.

There's no such thing as a trivial question! I always wondered that for a fair bit of time when I was younger. It wasn't until I visited the Hockey Hall of Fame that I realized the answer.

According to Legends of Hockey - NHL Trophies - Stanley Cup

Quote:
There have been numerous alterations to the Cup structure. In its infancy, tiered rings were added periodically to the bottom of the bowl. This was followed by long narrow bands in 1927 which were later replaced by uneven bands in 1947. Because the Cup is the only professional sports trophy where the name of every member of the winning team is inscribed, bands are often retired to make room for new champions. Retired bands, along with the original Stanley Cup bowl, are proudly displayed in Lord Stanley's Vault in the MCI Great Hall. Currently the Cup consists of a bowl, three tiered bands, a collar, and five barrel or uniform bands. The trophy stands at 35 ¼ inches and weighs 34 ½ pounds.
These are some pics I took of the original Stanley Cup Bowl and some of the bands. There is in the first pic a photo of Lord Stanley himself.

Here you can see some ENGRAVING FACTS, FIRSTS & FAUX PAS about the Stanley Cup, including photos of it during different decades to illustrate the dramatic changes.

I didn't see the cup when I went to the Hall of Fame 10 years ago I'll have to go back someday or wait until the Habs win it That should be soon enough, we've won one every decade so we need it before 2010.

Glad to see the Sens back on the winning track, well at least for one night. I'm surprise there wasn't any ice level cam to review Schaefer's goal, at least none that we saw. From his height and where he was holding his stick, it did look like a high stick but I'm not the one making the decision.

Congrats to the Sens on the win. I'm not a Sen fan, but I really wanted to see them hand the Buffaslugs a loss. It will be interesting to see if this is the true turning point for them. Back in October the Sens absolutely demolished NJ & TOR but then followed up with 5 straight losses. So a big win is not always the boon that we like it to be. But as long as Emery is in net I think the Sens stand a better chance of winning games than with Gerber.

Leaf game in Boston tonight. I imagine we will be very, very rusty after being off a week. Everything will hinge on Aubin. Will he be the goalie from the Montreal game(.962sv%) or the goalie from the Boston game(.714sv%)? He is such a Jeckyll & Hide player.

I noticed Calgary is starting to climb back up the standings after lounging near the bottom. It's weird how they always have such slow starts to the season.

the Buffaslugs, I it!!!! Seriously bizarre night last night man, the sens serve the sabers (whoo! go sens ) and the flyers kicked anaheim's butt! I haven't seen the game or read about it yet, but man with those scores it looks likes the teams should be reversed! maybe they just switched roles for the night, either way I'm glad the ducks didn't win

on the other hand, the sharks won, ( ) but they were totally lagging for the first two periods, we were out shot 43-26 without our awesome goalie it would have just been a slaughter. Then we got lucky on a 5 on 3, scored two times in 18 seconds..some good luck...but these guys need to step it up and not have their PPGs bail them out everytime.

....but seriously someone needs to hand Cheech some major good juju...cause he is just having the absolute worst luck ever he got ejected from a game (for a sketchy call hmmm ) and then he got slammed in the head with a puck, had to get stitched up, then he got high sticked(high stuck? LoL) in the face by someone else, and last night he got caught under a pile-up and one of the Avs landed on his leg. And then he was writhering on the ice and had to be helped by Joe and the trainer and was favoring his right leg. poor guy he's just needs some good luck to swing back.

I've always wondered so many things about the Stanley Cup because it is so different from the trophies of other sports. In the NBA, NFL, and baseball, the team gets to keep the trophy. In hockey, the team has to give the trophy back if they can't repeat or 3peat and so on. Teams in hockey never get to have the trophy because they only get to have the Stanley Cup if they win it. If they lose then it goes to some other team.

I can't believe the Stars lost to the Islanders. That should have been an easy win.
