| McLaren and de la Rosa take Friday practice San Marino GP - Second practice It’s very early days yet, but things are looking positive for the McLaren Mercedes team here at San Marino as test driver Pedro de la Rosa set the pace in both of today’s two 60-minute practice sessions, recording a best lap time of 1:20.484s in his MP4-20. "So far it has worked quite well," said de la Rosa. "I think there are still a few tenths in the car, we have to work a little bit on the suspension especially over the kerbs but so far it is quite good. We are looking for a podium finish here, I am not sure about winning. I think qualifying will be 70 percent of the outcome of the race because it is difficult to overtake here and we have to work on improving our qualifying performance." As ever, it is tempting to read too much into the out-and-out lap times as these Friday sessions are predominantly about tyre selection and endurance running for those teams which have a test driver. Still, de la Rosa lapped a comfortable half second clear of his nearest rival, Jenson button in his BAR Honda. It was another relatively incident free session at the 4.933KM circuit and with de la Rosa leading the way from Button, third place went to Kimi Raikkonen is the second McLaren Mercedes. The team have been working hard to try and get tyre temperate into their Michelin’s as so far this has been a big problem for the Woking- based squad in qualifying trim. Ricardo Zonta set the fourth best time in his Toyota. The Brazilian test driver managed to lap considerably faster than race drivers Jarno Trulli and Ralf Schumacher, who were down in 13th and 15th positions respectively. Fernando Alonso waited out 100 minutes of practice today before heading out to complete a timed lap in his Renault, underlining the confidence the team and driver have in the overall package. The Spaniard was fifth fastest ahead of the Ferrari duo of Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello. Alex Wurz, a race driver for McLaren this weekend, set the eighth best time in the third MP4-20 while Giancarlo Fisichella was ninth best as he and the team run the new RS25B V10 engine for the first time in anger. Takuma Sato was tenth fastest in the second BAR Honda ahead of the Sauber Petronas duo of Felipe Massa and Jacques Villeneuve. The Canadian has a great deal of pressure on his shoulders to perform for Sauber and today he proved to be on the pace of his team-mate lapping within a tenth of a second. Nick Heidfeld was just 14th in his BMW Williams while team-mate Mark Webber was another four positions back. It may just be Friday practice, but lapping three seconds adrift of the pace-setter is not what BMW Williams would hope for at a circuit in which they traditionally perform very well. David Coulthard was 16th in his Red Bull Cosworth while Narain Karthikeyan was 17th in his Jordan Toyota, Christian Klien and Tiago Monteiro in the second EJ15. Vitantonio Liuzzi was just 21st in his RB1 ahead of Roberto Doornbos in the third Jordan. Over at Minardi, Patrick Freisacher was 23rd in the new PS05 chassis while Christijan Albers did not complete a timed lap, leaving the pits in the new car right at the end of the session. It’s early days yet, but so far it seems that McLaren, Renault and Toyota seem strong with Ferrari not too far off the pace... Sound familiar? | ![]() ![]() Fernando and Flavio honoured in Brisighella Fernando Alonso and Flavio Briatore were recipients of awards at last night’s Lorenzo Bandini Trophy ceremony in Brisighella. Lorenzo Bandini is not a household name. The Italian, killed during the 1967 Monaco Grand Prix at the wheel of his Ferrari, won just one Grand Prix, the first ever Austrian GP held in 1964 at Zeltweg. His career included other notable triumphs, including a win in the Targa Florio forty years ago, but his was a career cut down before its prime – a shooting star that disappeared before it could burn at its brightest. For that reason, his hometown of Brisighella has awarded since 1992 the Lorenzo Bandini Trophy, to the most promising young driver in Formula 1. In 2005, Fernando Alonso was the recipient of the award, which was presented yesterday evening in a ceremony that included an audience composed of sportsmen, media and political figures. “This is a fantastic honour for me,” said Fernando. “The Bandini trophy is a prestigious award, and it special for me to be recognised by the Italian fans and jury. I would to thank them all for choosing me to receive this prize.” Fernando was not alone from the Renault F1 Team yesterday evening, as Flavio Briatore also received the Gold Medal of the Emilia-Romagna region. Preceded in this by such luminaries as former World Champion Niki Lauda, Flavio collected the award proudly in a season where his team currently sits atop the World Championship standings. Action resumes this morning at the track – with Fernando firmly focused on more trophies. Follow all the action from 11:00 local time. __________________ Fernando Alonso is the youngest F1: World Champion! (24 years 58 days) Race Winner Podium Finisher | |||

| I think I have been around since the first thread as well. I remember getting very excited that there was actually a F1 thread here, the people posting were so nice and actually posted back to me!! How many years ago was that? I was trying to work out when all the threads were done and I think that we used five threads last season/last year. Going from the fact that one of the threads has the year 2003 in it. Seems like such a long time ago when we made that thread. Thanks for all the news Marie ![]() And Marie has been posting the news/pics ever since the first thread I remember when she went away we would go without the lastest news until she got back Ahh the memories.__________________ After Roswell avatars? | red bull racing have confirmed they're going to have a ferrari engine next season - and with the move to new V8 engines, that means they'll be using the same engine as the ferrari team for the first part of the season __________________ Yoda Kicks Ass - It Says So On The T-Shirt | |||

| Hehe. Enjoy the race tonight everyone!! Going to be a great one. Awesome news for the Red Bull Racing team. I want to know how come they are doing so well when the Jaguar team was going so badly last year. They have done some amazing changes to the car over the off season. About time that we see some more competitive teams. I am loving the fact that this season is not bein dominated by the Ferrari team. They are well and truly (Trulli) on the back foot. Hehe, couldn't help myself. That is all that I can say about those pics.__________________ After Roswell avatars? Look no further. Fetch's Site | |||
